El Camino Real Derby Betting Tips – Zeewat Struts His Stuff At Golden Gate Fields

Posted by Marco Sussman on 2/17/2013 7:25:46 PM

Sports betting sharps should be getting warmed up on the road to the Kentucky Derby as the Grade-3 El Camino Real Derby prepares to kick off on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields, and a talented horse from Pennsylvania will be the one to cross the finish line ahead of the pack in his first graded-stakes start.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, February 16th, post time TBA
Where: Golden Gate Fields, Berkeley, CA
Pick: Zeewat

Carving is the first of two entries from trainer Bob Baffert, and the horse’s two-year-old campaign didn’t end well as he finished sixth in the Grade-1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park two months ago. This colt has three wins in five starts, but two of those starts have come in Grade-1 races and Carving has posted a fourth-place finish to go with his sixth from December. There won’t be many more chances for Carving to show that he deserves to continue on the trail to the Kentucky Derby.

Counting Days is another horse that could be on its last legs when it comes to the Derby after a fifth-place run in an allowance race at Santa Anita in late December, which followed a seventh-place finish in the non-graded Generous Stakes at Hollywood Park in November. A poor performance on Saturday could mean the end of the line for this three-year-old colt.

This will be the first graded-stakes race for Dice Flavor, who has one win in four starts, but hasn’t finished higher than third in any of the other three races and that may not bode very well for his chances. This horse will really need to step up to the next level to compete in this Grade-3 race, but stranger things have happened and horse betting players know that.

Manando will be making his sixth start, and second as a three-year-old as he may be Baffert’s best chance to win this race for the first time since 1996. Manando has four third-place finishes, including one in the Grade 3-Sham Stakes at Santa Anita last month, so he can run with some really good horses. He is definitely one to watch at Golden Gate on Saturday, especially if Martin Garcia is in the saddle again.

Nina’s Dragon will be making his debut, which means he’ll likely be a horse betting underdogs as there isn’t a lot of information out there on this colt. He has yet to go up against any type of competition, even in maiden or allowances races, so will he be able to turn it on in a relatively important race on the Kentucky Derby prep trail?

North Pacific is another horse stepping out in a race for the first time and like Nina’s Dragon, there isn’t a lot of history to check out. But the horse betting world is full of surprises and this three-year-old colt could make an impact on the Derby prep trail with a good result on Saturday.

Rush In won his first start in a maiden race at Churchill Downs as he makes his way to the west coast, but as everyone knows, a graded-stakes race is different from a maiden race and Rush In will have to raise his game to finish in the top three. It is still early on the prep trail, so this three-year-old colt should have a couple more opportunities to show his stuff, but he has to start at Golden Gate Fields.

Wildcat Moon is coming off a second-place run in the non-graded California Derby at Golden Gate Fields last month, and it was his third second-place finish in three starts. The potential is there for this three-year-old colt from Florida, but now he has to capitalize on this chance in order to move on to the next big race.

Zeewat could be one of the horse betting favorites after beating out Wildcat Moon in the California Derby and it was his fourth win in five starts, four of which have come in non-graded stakes. His last two starts have come at Golden Gate Fields and he is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who has plenty of success in this race: he leads all trainers with five wins in the El Camino, the last of which came in 2009.

How It Will Play Out

Zeewat is the best horse in the field, and he should be able to come away with the victory on Saturday in this online betting option.
