Working for a Living

With a plethora of information available for horseplayers today, one can never get enough material to evaluate and there is a service in Southern California that is worth delving into.

It is a workout report by a trusted professional and here are some of the recent evaluations to just get a clue as to how this information may help scope out winners.

The logical thinking would make this information invaluable with maidens and horses coming back from a layoff.

In a recent race at Del Mar, Maiden Special Weight, the information pointed to a couple of horses that ran one/two. And it also gave a negative report on a runner that earned a C plus rating and the comment was finding his way.

That runner finished dead last in this particular race.

Of the one/two finishers, Seattle Serenade and Statesman, the winner was seen to be traveling well and was sharp for the debut. The word was obviously out on this runner and he paid even-money with a B rating. The other horse that was well spoken off had worked in :47 flat coming to this particular race and both of his works were given a B plus rating. That runner was over 11 lengths clear of the show horse and will be very tough next out.

Juvenile maidens were also on this card and 6 fillies lined up for a 6-furlong race. Several of the runners earned B minus ratings and the race may have been phony since the favorite got to lugging and finished far back.

Young fillies were also pitted on the card in an allowance race. Of all of the entrants, the miss that was coming off the longest layoff succeed. Her name is My Dynamo. She had not raced in over 2 months since chasing the likely champion Songbird.

She was said to be a quick strider that seems fit off the break and she responded when called upon to win at 6-1.

Last Sunday, there were also some revelations. In the third race the winner Cant Do the Danse was said to be trying hard in her workout a few days prior to this race and that there was plenty of speed there.

The horse that ran dead last, Tilted Nobility, had run second in similar spot at Del Mar in the summer but had negative comments like dull and slow and never got much going and also no better from the gate, under pressure.

Remember, so of the best information is the negative stuff. Everybody and their brother that is involved with a horse at the track knows his horse, but not the competition.

In the 7th last Sunday, Maiden Special weight juvenile fillies pitted skills. One runner, Gone to Bali, had not raced since July after flashing brief speed and was said to need more racing when given a C plus rating. She finished 6th of 7.

The Doug O’Neill student, Sweet Hallory, was making her first start and had been in training since August. She had a pair of local drills under her belt and the comments of ‘only leaned on late and trying hard while guided a bit, steady drill.

In the end, this miss pushed the pace from the sound of the bell, was inching away late and paid a juicy 6-1.

These are obviously just a few examples and it takes time to read into the information but to have a set of eyes on a workout out instead of just reading a time is invaluable.
