Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes Betting – Palace Wears The Crown

Posted by on 11/12/2015 8:58:03 PM

The Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes is a non-graded event for horses three years and older, and it is held at Laurel Park in Maryland. It has a purse of $300,000 and it is run over six furlongs on dirt. The Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes has been run every year since 1990, except for 2008 and 2010.

This race for sprinters usually draws a decent field, and this year is no exception as it is the main event of an 11-race day at Laurel Park on Saturday. Palace was supposed to run at the Breeders' Cup Sprint, but he had run a race the previous week, so he was pointed to this race and with good reason as he'll beat the nine-horse field to the wire for the victory.

What: Horse Betting

When: Saturday, November 14th, 2015; post time TBA

Where: Laurel Park Racecourse, Laurel, MD

Pick: Palace

Cutty Shark is making his first start since February, when he finished second at the Grade-3 General George. He had six finishes in a row in the money, so it was disappointing that he had to take so much time off. It'll be interesting to see how this four-year-old deals with the layoff.

Gentlemen's Bet hasn't finished in the money in four races, all of which were graded-stakes events. However, he finished third at the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2013; the problem is that he didn't race in all of 2014. He came back with a win at the non-graded Hot Springs in March, but this six-year-old might be running out of gas.

Jack's In The Deck hasn't finished in the money since an allowance race in October of last year, a span of six races. His last win came at the non-graded First State Dash in October 2011, so it would be a smal miracle if this six-year-old wound up in the winner's circle. Finishing in the top three might even be asking too much.

Palace probably comes in as the favorite in this race after finishing fourth at the Grade-1 Vosburgh, and he finished sixth at the Breeders' Cup Sprint last year, along with a pair of Grade-1 wins. Like many thoroughbred horses that are six years old, Palace seems to be slowing down a little, but in this field, he is at or near the top of the list and will be a threat on Saturday.

Sir Rockport is one of two three-year-olds in the field and this is his graded-stakes debut, so there isn't much known about him. Don't put too much stock in him this weekend, but keep an eye out for the future.

Sonny Inspired is coming off a third-place finish at the non-graded Mister Diz back in August, and it has been an up-and-down year for him. He won a pair of allowance races earlier in 2015, but then finished sixth and ninth in two non-graded races prior to the Mister Diz. Which version of this four-year-old gelding will we see on Saturday?

Spring To The Sky has been running turf races as of late, and he has finished in the money in just two of his last seven starts. Prior to that, tho, he has won three in a row. Don't count out this six-year-old just yet, and he did win his last start on dirt back in August of last year at the non-graded Troy. He might be a good value bet to make.

Stallwalkin' Dude had finished in the money in eight straight races before finishing eighth at the Breeders' Cup Sprint on Halloween. That field might have been a bit much for him, but this five-year-old gelding has a lot of speed in his legs as he showed by a third-place run at the Vosburgh in September. He should be near the front of the pack on Saturday.

Trouble Kid is the other three-year-old in the field and after finishing in the money in two of three maiden races, he won the Grade-3 Gallant Bob in September. This is a very promising horse that has yet to reach his potential and will be one to watch this weekend.

How It Will Play Out

Palace has a lot of experience in much bigger races than this, and while Trouble Kid and Stallwalkin' Dude might make a push, he is the best horse in the field. Take Palace to the bank on Saturday.
