Gotham Stakes Betting Tips – Escapefromreality Escapes Gotham With A Victory

Posted by Marco Sussman on 2/28/2013 6:01:37 PM

Sports betting players preparing for the Kentucky Derby should keep an eye on the Grade-3 Gotham Stakes, which usually preps horses for the Wood Memorial. This race is 1 1/16 miles on dirt at Aqueduct, and Saturday’s winner is a horse that has come close to winning there in the past.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, March 2nd, 5:02 PM ET post time
Where: Aqueduct Racetrack, Queens, NY
Pick: Escapefromreality

Amerigo Vespucci will be making his fifth start and third overall at Aqueduct after finishing fourth in the Grade-3 Withers back at the beginning of February, but there may be a fear that the colt is struggling with distance. Trainer Timothy Tullock Jr. has added a little more to each race, and Amerigo Vespucci’s results have gotten worse since winning his maiden in October. Keep that in mind before you make your horse betting pick.

Champion Boy came in fifth at the Withers in his second career start, both of which have come in Queens, so he should be used to the track. A better finishing kick is needed if this colt is going to finish in the top three over 1 1/16 miles and with Big Brown in his pedigree, Champion Boy has a lot to live up to.

Elnaawi won his maiden in January in his second try at Aqueduct, and now the colt has to take the next step in his development, which is a graded-stakes race. Because of this, Elnaawi probably isn’t going to be a favorite in this race, but many insiders feel he has a lot of potential and he could show that on Saturday in New York.

Escapefromreality has finished second in his first two starts, including to Revolutionary (who won’t be in the field on Saturday) at the Withers. Both of his starts have come at Aqueduct, so he is another horse that should be used to the track and now Escapefromreality just has to break through and pick up a huge win on the Kentucky Derby prep trail.

Now And Then is making a graded-stakes start for the first time after winning his maiden at Aqueduct in January, but he may find the Gotham more difficult. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin (who won this race with Like Now in 2006) has confidence that the horse will show his stuff after winning a six-furlong race, but how will he handle the increase in distance and competition?

Ore Pass is coming off a victory in the non-graded Frank Whiteley Stakes in January at Laurel Park, but he has never run more than seven furlongs and this will a stiff test for the three-year-old colt. He has two wins in three starts, but he also has a fifth-place run in an allowance race at Philadelphia Park.

Overanalyze might be the best colt in the field and the horse betting favorite for this event, especially after winning the Grade-2 Remsen at Aqueduct, but that was way back in November and it was his last action. He is also from the Todd Pletcher stable, and Pletcher has won this race twice (2007 with Cowtown Cat, and 2011 with Stay Thirsty), so he knows how to gear a horse up for the Gotham.

Siete De Oros has made three starts and the past two have been in graded-stakes races, most recently, a third-place run in the Withers. The other was in a handicap race, which isn’t a fair indication of how he’ll do on Saturday, but this may be a horse betting longshot to watch as he and trainer Ramon Preciado seem to be willing to put in the work.

On the other hand, Sky Captain is making his graded-stakes debut after two maidens (a first and second at Churchill Downs) and two allowance races (a second and fifth at Gulfstream Park). He makes his way north for a huge race and a solid performance will put him in line for another start on the Derby prep trail.

Transparent finally won his maiden on his sixth attempt, the last three of which came at Aqueduct. He is another horse from the McLaughlin stable and probably isn’t highly regarded, so don’t expect a lot out of this colt, but you never know what will happen in the world of thoroughbred horse racing.

West Hills Giant is coming off a third-place run in the non-graded Java Gold at Aqueduct, but he is wildly inconsistent. After winning the non-graded New York Breeders’ Futurity, West Hills Giant fell to seventh in the Grade-3 Pilgrim a month later, so it’s a matter of which version of this colt shows up.

Vyjack has made three starts, all ending in victories at Aqueduct, most recently in the Grade-2 Jerome Handicap in January. All three starts have come since November, so this colt may have the momentum and should be a horse to watch on Saturday afternoon.
