Haskell Invitational Betting Tips – Gemologist Surges To Victory At Monmouth Park

Posted by Marco Sussman on 7/26/2012 6:15:06 PM

Online betting players like watching horse races with big purses, and the Grade 1-Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park has one of those; to the tune of $1,000,000 to be exact. The Haskell will be run on Sunday, and the last three winners have gone on to win the Eclipse Award for Champion Three-Year-Old horses. Will Gemologist ride a Haskell win to a late-season push for the award?

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, July 29th, confirm post time
Where: Monmouth Park, Oceanport, NJ
Pick: Gemologist

Paynter has been out of action since finishing second to Union Rags in the Belmont Stakes, so you know that he has endurance to spare and the 1 1/8-mile race should be no problem for him. Not to mention, Paynter is being trained by Bob Baffert, who has the most wins for a trainer in this event with five, all since 2001 and his horses, Coil and Lookin’ At Lucky, have won the last two. However, Martin Garcia was in the saddle for those two winners, but was replaced by Mike Smith.

Gemologist stumbled to a 16th-place finish at the Kentucky Derby after five straight wins, and the poor result really took the air of the sails of his stable. He hasn’t raced since Churchill Downs, and trainer Todd Pletcher is looking for his third victory at this event. This is a huge chance for Gemologist to show he belongs in the upper echelon of three-year-olds.

Dullahan has been off since the Belmont, where he finished seventh, and he has plenty of experience against talented fields as his last seven starts have been graded-stakes races. He has two wins in those races and five finishes inside the top three, and Dullahan could be reunited with Kent Desormeaux, who was in the saddle for five straight starts before Javier Castellano was drafted into the fold.

Nonios has made just four starts in his career, winning three and coming in second in another, the Grade-2 Swaps, but two of the wins came in a maiden and an allowance race. He has performed well in his last two starts, both graded-stakes races, but the Haskell will be the biggest race by far for Nonios, whose stable want to enter him into the Breeders Cup Classic in November, but he’ll need a couple of strong performances between now and then, starting at Monmouth Park.

My Adonis is coming off a win at the Long Branch, which isn’t a graded-stakes race, but he was reunited with jockey Elvis Trujillo, who was out of the saddle for one race. My Adonis has never won a graded-stakes race, although he has a second-place finish in the Grade-3 Gotham Stakes. He has the potential to run with the best horses, but My Adonis has to prove it on Saturday.

Le Bernardin followed a 10th-place run at the Grade-2 Peter Pan by winning the Grade-3 Pegasus, so now he has another chance to show he can run with the big dogs. Mike Luzzi has started with Le Bernardin in four of his five races, but he wasn’t there at the Peter Pan. With Luzzi back in the saddle, Le Bernardin stepped up to roll over the competition, but that competition will be much tougher in the Haskell, one of the most prestigious races for three-year-olds that isn’t a Triple Crown race. Will he be able to keep his momentum going, especially since the Pegasus was held at Monmouth Park? Only time will tell.

Handsome Mike hasn’t won in five graded-stakes starts, and even though he hasn’t won, he has finished in the top four in four of those five races. He is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Grade-3 Spiral, but Handsome Mike has had five jockeys in seven races and his handlers have to do a better job of finding him a steady jockey because horses respond to certain styles of riding.

Finally, Stealcase seems to have a steady jockey as Shaun Bridgmohan has been on his back for the last three starts, and he has finished in the top three in all three races, winning an allowance race at Churchill Downs, then coming in second in the Grade 3-Matt Winn. Could Stealcase steal the show on Saturday? It’s not likely, but definitely possible.

This is a very close field in terms of talent, but Gemologist will bounce back from a poor performance at Churchill Downs to take the victory and give Pletcher his first win at the Haskell. He may offer a little value as well, so go with Gemologist in your sports betting picks.
