Holy Bull Stakes Betting Predictions – Shanghai Bobby Stays Unbeaten

Posted by Marco Sussman on 1/24/2013 6:00:24 PM

Sports betting players have to start thinking about the Kentucky Derby and the Grade-3 Holy Bull Stakes is one of the races on the prep trail as we kick off 2013. Look for a Derby favorite to remain undefeated as Shanghai Derby steps up at Gulfstream Park.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, January 26th, post time TBA h
Where: Gulfstream Park, Hallendale Beach, FL
Pick: Shanghai Bobby

Bern Identity is a horse that players are going to hear a lot about as trainer Kelly Breen has high hopes for him, hoping to get the colt into the Grade-2 Fountain of Youth Stakes next month as well as the Grade-1 Florida Derby in April. He didn’t finish lower than third in six 2012 starts, racking up three wins, including one in the Grade-2 Sanford last July, and Bern Identity also finished second in the Grade-3 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes in November, his last start.

Clearly Now won his maiden (special weight) as well as an allowance race before finishing third in the non-graded Display in December at Woodbine, and this three-year-old colt may have a little work to do before he convinces horse betting players that he is worth the wager. This is by far the best field that Clearly Now has ever faced, and this race will have a lot to do with his Kentucky Derby chances, or at least the chance to continue down the Derby prep trail.

Dewey Square also won allowance and maiden races before stepping up to a graded stakes event, the Grade-2 Kentucky Jockey Club, finishing third at Churchill Downs in November. The goal for trainer Dale Romans is to get this three-year-old colt to the Kentucky Derby in May, and a strong performance on Saturday would do a lot for his chances.

Frac Daddy was also entered in the Kentucky Jockey Club, finishing second to Uncaptured, and it was also his first graded-stakes race after taking two attempts to win an MSW event, which he did at Churchill Downs. A win here, or at least a solid effort, would put Frac Daddy on the road to compete in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, and horse betting players should keep an eye on this three-year-old colt.

Fredericksburg should be a darkhorse heading into this race, having failed to win in four starts after coming in second in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park in December. That was the best finish that this three-year-colt has ever had, but that may not be enough to make Fredericksburg a horse betting favorite and you’ll probably be able to find decent odds for him.

Itsmyluckyday has been up and down in his career, posting four wins in eight starts, but he ended with fourth-place and sixth-place results in his last two races of 2012, which were both Grade-3 events. But he began 2013 with a bang, winning the non-graded stakes Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year’s Day and it’s just a matter of which version of this three-year-old colt is going to show up on Saturday.

Joshua’s Comprise came in fourth at the Gulfstream Park Derby, and he has one win in 14 starts, which came in an allowance race in September. That isn’t a good track record for any horse, much less a three-year-old colt and Joshua’s Comprise probably isn’t going to offer a lot in the way of horse betting odds. He could be a darkhorse to watch, but you would be taking quite a flier on him.

On the other hand, Shanghai Bobby has won all five of his starts and three of those have come in graded-stakes events, including the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November. This three-year-old colt should be a horse betting favorite on Saturday, and trainer Todd Pletcher (who won this race last year with Algorithms) has managed to put A.R. Napravnik in the saddle for all five races, has a Kentucky Derby contender on his hands.

Sr. Quisqueyano has finished second in four straight starts, and he has never started a graded-stakes event in six career events, so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the jump in competition. He finished second to Itsmyluckyday at the Gulfstream Park Derby in his first start at Gulfstream Park, so Sr. Quisueyano is a horse worth keeping an eye on, at least.

Tulira Castle has never started a race that wasn’t an allowance or MSW event, winning one of each (and finishing second in the other two starts), and he is another horse that has to adapt to the leap in competition. If he does, another Derby prep race could be in his future.

How It Will Play Out

It’s tough to look past Shanghai Bobby, the best horse in the field, and he should be your online betting pick on Saturday.
