Pennsylvania Derby Betting – Will Take Charge takes charge in Philadelphia

Posted by on 9/18/2013 7:32:38 PM

Sports betting players looking for a big horse race this weekend should look no further than the Grade-2 Pennsylvania Derby. Held at the venue formerly known at Philadelphia Park, this 1 1/8 mile race on dirt should have a couple of Breeders’ Cup contenders in the field, and Will Take Charge will outlast them all to the finish line.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, September 21st, post time TBA
Where: Parx Casino and Racing, Philadelphia, PA
Pick: Will Take Charge

Battier has been up and down in graded-stakes races, finishing third, fourth and sixth in his last three starts, and he is coming off a fourth in the Grade-3 Smarty Jones earlier this month. Trainer Todd Pletcher hasn’t won this race since 2002 with Harlan’s Holiday, and he’ll have some work to do to get this three-year-old colt up to speed to run with the big dogs.

Fury Kapcori has only run in one graded-stakes race, but he did very well, coming in second to Violence in last year’s Grade-1 CashCall Futurity. He hasn’t done much in 2013, finishing fourth in an allowance race and second in the non-graded El Cajon, both of which happened in August. This horse could emerge as a solid horse betting pick for players during the second half of the year, so keep an eye out for him.

Java’s War bounced back with a fourth-place result in the Grade-2 Swaps in July, and this was needed because of a 13th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby after going in with high hopes. A good finish in the Pennsylvania Derby would be huge for this colt, which won the Grade-1 Blue Grass prior to the stumble at Churchill Downs, so we know he has the speed and should be on the radar of horse betting sharps.

Moreno has been strong recently, starting with a win in the Grade-1 Dwyer to kick off July, and then later that month, he finished third in the Grade-2 Jim Dandy. In August, he finished second to Will Take Charge in the Grade-1 Travers and Moreno is really starting to find his stride after a slow start to his thoroughbred racing career. A win in this race would validate a horse that needed nine tries to break his maiden, and he could definitely pull it out.

Romanish came in fifth in the Travers after winning the non-graded Curlin’ in July, but that fifth doesn’t look so bad as the Travers had an excellent field. Here, Romanish has a very good chance of placing in the top three, and he should relatively fresh with just five starts in 2013, three of which were maiden races. Romanish could definitely run near the front and with a few breaks, a win isn’t off the table, so consider his odds.

Speak Logistics has finished second in his last three starts, including in the Smarty Jones, and he also finished third in the Grade-2 Fountain of Youth Stakes back in February. The speed is there, but Speak Logistics may have to find an extra gear to beat this field to the wire on Saturday in Philadelphia. He hasn’t won a race since the non-graded Florida Stallion In Reality last October.

Transparent is probably a longshot thanks to a ninth-place finish in the Travers, and this was his second start in a graded-stakes event. His first was slightly better, a sixth in the Grade-3 Gotham in March, but we’re not sure he can keep up with the top end of the field. Anything can happen, but a win for Transparent on Saturday would be a considered a horse betting upset in these books.

On the other hand, Will Take Charge will likely be a horse betting favorite after winning the Travers, and his second in the Jim Dandy followed top-10 finishes in all three Triple Crown events, so it has been an excellent year for this colt. A win in this race could earn him a spot in a Breeders’ Cup event in November, you would think, so the stakes are high (no pun intended) for Will Take Charge and trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who has never won this race.

How It Will Play Out

Will Take Charge is the most consistent horse in this field and has shown that he can keep up with most of the elite horses in the United States. He should be your online betting pick for the Pennsylvania Derby.
