Getting It Together

Posted by on 3/16/2015 9:45:31 PM

Sure, there are the Dortmunds and the Carpe Diems that have proven they are talented but there are a couple of sophomores on the Triple Crown Trail that are getting their act together quickly.

Enter Bolo. He was education in his debut at Del Mar but has been very impressive since. He broke his maiden at the beach inching away late and then took the $79,000 Eddie Logan drawing away.

Freshened until the San Felipe on March 7, Bolo was making his dirt debut in a race he had to need and he ran super. He was right there at the top of the lane before being overhauled by Dortmund and Prospect Park.

The son of Temple City was just short in the San Felipe and should really take a step forward. And he could have been 2 nd in the San Felipe if not forced to hesitate and move inside. He switched leads like a smart horse, and continued to compete.

He was aiming for the Bob Lewis as a prep for the San Felipe but had a setback.

He has not appeared to be rank but he just seems to settle and glide. He has a right to run all day long as his sire won at a mile and a half. And if you go deep in the pedigree it gets better. This runner’s second dam is also the dam of Mine That Bird, who won the Kentucky Derby and Dullahan, who won the mile and a quarter Pacific Classic.

Trained by the very capable Carla Gaines this runner could upset the apple cart.

Mubtaahij is far off the radar but this youngster is seasoned and talented. He lost his first couple of races but they were on grass. Switched to the dirt in Dubai on New Year’s Eve, he beat a dozen rivals despite breaking poorly. Raced back 15 days later, he again beat a dozen foes winning by 5 lengths.

Trained by world-class conditioner, Michael de Kock, he made his stakes debut in a Group 3 and did everything but win when on the wrong end of a photo but tons best of the rest.

On March 7, he raced in a mile and three-sixteenth $250,000 affair at Meydan, tracked the leaders and prevailed. The horse that ran second in that race was a perfect 10 for 10 going into the event.

One of the major things he has going for him is his stamina. Winning at a mile and three-sixteenths on the taxing a deep Meydan track will give him the best foundation of any if he is to make it to the Kentucky Derby.

And the blood is there for Mubtaahij to run all day long. His half sister Lilly of the Valley took a Group 1 going a mile and a quarter on grass.

Okay, some will say that it is too much to ask a horse to go around the world and win the Kentucky Derby but it has been done.

Back in 1971 and obscure $1,200 purchased named Canonero II had won at the same mile and three sixteenths in Venezuela and then shocked the world winning the Kentucky Derby.

Sometimes, dreams do come true.
