Inner Strip Angles

Posted by on 12/22/2015 6:30:39 AM

The Inner Strip at Aqueduct has been employed for a few weeks now and there have been some trends that have been emerging so let’s try to examine and take advantage.

Granted, racing in New York at this time of year is not pretty and not easy but sometimes you have to put on the work boots and punch the clock no matter what the obstacles are there to overcome.

One thing that bettors must be aware of is the Davis influence at this meeting. Three siblings are riding this winter in New York. Dylan Davis is the youngest, and his 2 sisters Jackie and Katie are also weathering the cold weather at the Big A.

With a father like Robbie, who was a solid rider in his days in New York, the Davis clan should have pretty good idea of how the inner strip usually plays and Dylan took advantage in the opener just last Thursday when he sat an ideal trip just off the leader before pulling away and getting Ant and Bee home for his diploma.

Katie ran 5th with a first-time starter and Jackie was caught wide and never fired.

Ant and Bee was one of three runners Thursday that went wire-to-wire. The best place to be this day was in a stalk and kick position.

On Friday, if you didn’t have speed, you were in deep trouble. Six of the 9 winners went virtually all the way on the front end and some of the horses were making the lead for the first time.

Quibbler opened up the day going right to the lead but had never been on the lead in her life.

Both of Midnight Champagne’s wins came from just off the pace prior to Friday but Cornelio Velasquez sent her along and she cashed after opening up by 5.

This is the time of year when a youngster that is ambitious can make some noise and apprentice Harry Hernandez hustled Singsong from the gate Friday and cashed at 4-1. The runner had never been better than third early on.

Smart riders adjust and Aaron Gryder put the Richard Violette student on the lead as the colt was showing for a price tag for the first time and the runner got brave with the lead to pay $21.20.

Upsetters won the next 3 races Friday before it was back to normal as the late Daily Double was won by runners that made the lead and kept on going.

On Saturday 4 winner made the lead and kept on going. And only one winner came from farther than 2 lengths off the pace.

One of the more impressive winners was Chad Brown’s student Financial Modeling in the $100,000 Queens County Stakes.

The colt had only made the lead once in his 7-race career prior to Saturday but Irad Ortiz knows where his bread is buttered and he rode the youngster aggressively in his first stakes attempt. The race was away in good order, rated kindly on the lead and extended his winning margin despite swerving out in around the 8th pole.

Obviously, the writing is on the wall. One of the reasons speed is super dangerous on this surface is because it is a compact venue and this trend will continue until the spring.
