Jockey Club Gold Cup Betting – Orb Keeps Rolling Towards The Breeders’ Cup Classic

Posted by on 9/25/2013 8:02:38 PM

Sports betting sharps should keep an eye on the horse racing calendar with the Breeders’ Cup Classic on the horizon, and the Grade-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup is a massive race on that road. This looks to be a solid field from top to bottom, and one horse has been the king of this Belmont Park race for two years in a row now. Look for one of the most consistent horses of 2013 to end that run as Orb beats the field and makes his way to the winner’s circle.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, September 28th, post time TBA
Where: Belmont Park, Elmont, NY
Pick: Orb

(Entry status as of Wednesday, September 25th)

Alpha (probable) is coming off a big win in the Grade-1 Woodward Stakes, his first since the Grade-1 Travers last August. This four-year-old colt hadn’t finished better than fourth in a race since the Travers, but the Woodward showed he still had some speed left in him. Trainer Shug McLaughlin would love to enter him in the Breeders’ Cup Classic after last year’s 12th-place finish.

Cross Traffic (probable) has finished either first (three times) or second in all five career starts, including a win most recently in the Grade-1 Whitney Handicap in August. Trainer Todd Pletcher watched him win the Grade-3 Westchester back in April, but can this four-year-old rise to the occasion in a Grade-1 flat race?

Speaking of flat, Flat Out (probable) is going for his third straight win in this race after finishing second to Alpha in the Woodward, and prior to that, he had won the Grade-2 Suburban Handicap. Flat Out, this seven-year-old finished third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, is a force no matter the type of race and he’ll be a popular horse betting pick on Saturday for good reason.

Last Gunfighter (probable) has never finished lower than third in 12 career starts, but the first six were maiden and/or allowance races, and he hasn’t run a Grade-1 race yet. Still, horse betting sharps have to be intrigued by this four-year-old, which won the Grade-3 Philip H. Iselin and finished second to Flat Out in the Suburban. Keep an eye out for this colt.

Orb (probable) has had a fantastic year, posting four victories in seven starts, including the Kentucky Derby. He also finished fourth in the Preakness Stakes, third in the Belmont Stakes and is coming off a third in the Travers. Expect this horse to be in contention for a couple years and a win from him on Saturday wouldn’t be a surprise in the slightest.

Palace Malice (probable) finished right behind Orb in the Travers, which followed up back-to-back wins in the Belmont and the Grade-2 Jim Dandy. The goal is to enter this three-year-old in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which is almost a certainty and you would think a top-three finish would be enough to get him there. Horse betting players will definitely have Palace Malice on their radars.

Paynter (possible) finished second to Palace Malice in the Belmont, then won the Grade-1 Haskell Invitational. Since then, he has won an allowance race, finished second in the Grade-2 San Diego Handicap and posted a fifth in the Woodward, so this is a horse that is usually in the mix in both flat and handicap races. If he isn’t entered in this race, Paynter will likely end up in the Grade-1 Awesome Again at Santa Anita Park, so he should end up in your racebook this weekend, one way or another.

Ron The Greek (possible) came in sixth in this race last year, and has been pretty steady since then. He finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, won the non-graded Sunshine Millions, and has posted either a third or fourth-place finish in each of his last five starts, four of which were Grade-1 races. You may be able to find decent horse betting odds on this six-year-old and it could be worth a shot.

Vitoria Olimpica (possible) is definitely the horse betting longshot in this field as this would be his third career start and first in a graded-stakes event. He did win the non-graded Alydar in August, but this field is exponentially better than what he faced at Saratoga.

How It Will Play Out

Orb will end Flat Out’s run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and should be your online betting pick this Saturday.
