Leaders in the Clubhouse

Posted by on 7/6/2015 9:39:19 PM

As any Professional Golf Association fan who is worth his weight in Titilists knows, the leaders in the clubhouse refers to the players that have completed their final round and are waiting for the rest to finish and for horseracing racing, the leaders have just had the mid-way point.

The bottom line is the money line and once again Todd Pletcher is the one to catch once again. He is running away with the money title after 6 months with over $3 million in earnings over American Pharoah’s trainer Bob Baffert.

Of the top 10 trainers in money won, Baffert by far has saddled the fewest runners.

Chad Brown , a student of the late great Bobby Frankel, is clearly entrenched in third in the money list and this trainer has an extremely bright future.

One of the best kept secrets on the national spectrum is Southern California based Jerry Hollendorfer.

These 4, along with trainers like Bill Mott, Steve Asmussen, Kiaran McLaughlin and Michael Maker are always near the top but there are some minor barns that bettors can latch onto and make money during the summer and beyond.

Ramon Preciado , who plies his trade on the East Coast and often times in Philly, just wins races. He won with 31% of his starters the first half of the year.

Phil D’Amato , for years the assistant of the recently-deceased Mike Mitchell, has learned his lessons well and is popping at 28% so far this year.

Richard Baltas , who has always had a good eye for a horse, has been on a major roll out West for a couple of years now. He only sent out 163 starters through June but he greeted 37 back in the charmed circle.

As far as jockeys are concerned, it’s kind of like the riddle about what came first, the chicken or the egg.

The riders that win the most races, get the top mounts and the riders that don’t win all that often are left struggling for work.

In reality there is very little difference between the top tier of riders in this country or any country and the rest of the colony.

Sure, one pilot may be more prepared and more aware of things like bias, speed situations and how the race has been playing but basically, once the gates open, it’s every man for himself.

Let’s take a look at some longshot pilots that are about to emerge in the second half of this year.

Colby Hernandez is one of those riders. Last year he finished 11th in wins overall and this season he has won with 28% of his mounts. That’s riding.

Elvis Trujillo has moved his tact around a few times in recent years but once this one gets his feet solid in one particular meet, he will start winning races in bunches.

Jose Montano is another pilot that must be watched. He can win with any style of horse and has proved it 29% of the time in the first half of the year.

As the summertime blues unfold in the next few months, try to look at some of the lesser lights among trainers and jockeys and look toward value.
