Long Island Handicap Betting – Aigue Marine Comes Out On Top At Aqueduct.

Posted by on 2/5/2014 4:55:22 AM

Sports betting sharps had a busy weekend with the Breeders’ Cup, so it shouldn’t be a surprise the following weekend is slightly slower. But the Grade-3 Long Island Handicap offers the chance to wager on some horse racing, and at 1 ½ miles on turf, it is going to be a grueling race for fillies or mares aged three years old and up. This year’s winner of a $150,000 purse will improve on placing third last year as Aigue Marine finds her way to the winner’s circle.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, November 9th, post time TBA

Where : Aqueduct Racetrack, Ozone Park, NY

Pick : Aigue Marine

(All horses entered as of Wednesday, November 6th)

Aigue Marine comes from Britain, but she made her American debut at this race last year, finishing third behind Starformer and Mystical Star. However, she hasn’t run since winning an allowance race at Gulfstream Park back in March, and that could go one of two ways: the four-year filly will be well-rested, or she’ll be rusty. The speed is there, and the distance of 1 ½ miles doesn’t seem to bother her; in fact, she seems to get better down the stretch.

Anjaz bounced back from a disappointing seventh in the Grade-2 New York Stakes in June by finishing second in the non-graded Waya at Saratoga two months later. This four-year-old also came in second to Tannery in the Sheepshead Bay Stakes in May, and she may have an ace in her back pocket: her jockey is listed to be Javier Castellano, who has won three of the last five editions of the Long Island Handicap.

Inimitable Romanee will be making her graded-stakes debut, although she has made 13 starts overall in her career, winning once. Only twice has she finished outside the top three, but one of those results were in her most recent start as Inimitable Romanee finished eighth in the Ticonderoga last month. This five-year-old has never run longer than 1 1/8 miles, so that is something that horse betting players should consider.

Left A Message hasn’t finished higher than fourth in three graded-stakes events, but she has a first and a second in her last two starts at 1 ½ miles, which have come within the last three months. Therefore, she could be worth a look by horse betting sharps and it might be time for this four-year-old to break through at this level.

Sheppard’s Pie is probably going to be a darkhorse as his track record isn’t that great at all. He has never finished higher than fourth in any of his four career starts, and none of those have come in graded-stakes events. Her sixth in the non-graded Rood and Riddle Dowager in October was her first since April 2011, so that may have been a matter of getting the rust off, but there was nothing before that time off that suggested this five-year-old could run with top horses.

Strathnaver won in her lone start at 1 ½ miles, claiming the top spot in the Grade-3 Bewitch Stakes in April. She also has a victory from the non-graded Lady Baltimore in September, but Strathnaver also came in seventh and eighth in a pair of graded-stakes events between those victories. Which version of this four-year-old is going to show up on Saturday in New York?

Tabreed is another thoroughbred making her graded-stakes debut, and she has a pair of allowance wins in her six starts. She did finish third in the non-graded Omnibus in August at 1 3/8 miles, so this could be another sleeper for horse betting players; at four years old, Tabreed could be just hitting her stride.

White Rose rounds out the field and is the only three-year-old competing on Saturday, but she has mixed results since moving to graded-stakes events. She followed a second in the Grade-3 Glens Falls from September with a seventh in the Grade-1 Flower Bowl Invitational later that month, and she has never run longer than 1 ¼ miles. That may have been a case of too much, too soon for this three-year-old, and this will be a major test for White Rose.

How It Will Play Out

Aigue Marine may fly under the radar because of her lack of action in 2013, but she is a rare horse that has an extra gear in longer races and she’ll be the first to the finish line on Saturday. Make Aigue Marine your online betting pick.
