As most online sports betting site players just experienced a stellar weekend of racing, let’s try to make some sense about the result and what we can expect in the important weeks to come leading to the Breeders’ Cup.

We’ll look at a few races from New York here and a few more from California in another piece.

First off, the Beldame kicked off a 6-race stakes fest at Belmont and Princess of Sylmar sent a message to Royal Delta that there is a new sheriff in town.

Royal Delta was odds-on in the $400,000 fray but the easy lead that seemed likely never materialized as rank 35-1 outsider Roman Invader made the lead and Delta just never recovered.

Princess of Sylmar went head-and-head with Delta and finally drew away to win by 2 lengths with a juicy 105 Beyer. With the win, Princess has more than likely secured the sophomore filly championship and she earned a berth in the BC Distaff.

Graydar was a popular chalk in the Kelso Handicap and he did not disappoint winning in wire-to-wire fashion to earn an automatic berth in the BC Dirt Mile.

He ran his record to 5 for 6 and it was his first start after returning from an injury. Although he has natural speed, he doesn’t need the lead to win. Graydar posted a Beyer of 103.

Private Zone, an interloper from Del Mar, took the Vosburgh by stealing the race on the front end under Martin Pedroza, who is not a household name but is as steady as the day is long.

Private Zone proved last year he belonged in elite company by running second in Santa Anita’s Grade 1 Malibu and his 108 winning Beyer should set him up ideally for the BC Sprint. Consistency is his game and speed is his name.

It was no joke for the runners-up in the Flower Bowl but Laughing did just that all the way to the bank holding on by a half-length in a clever victory. Her rider Jose Lezcano did a masterful job of slowing down the pace and reserving just enough in the tank.

Laughing posted a winning Beyer of 96 winning her 4th in a row this year and that will set her up nicely for the BC Filly and Mare Turf.

In the Joe Hirsch, Little Mike came up big at 7-1 to secure a start in the BC Turf. It was really a case of 2 Mikes, as Mike Smith took a clue from retired rider Ramon Dominquez and Little Mike to settle off the lead before making the lead with a quarter of a mile to go to win by a scant nose.

He earned a legit 104 Beyer as he will be out to defend his Turf title. The favorites in the Hirsch, the 3-ply entry of trainer Chad Brown, ran well but could only complete the trifecta. Big Blue Kitten and Real Solution will live to fight another day.

Granted, these are just tune-ups and now these runners will have to travel across the country for the big pay day next month but they will be coming sharp and must be given long looks in the BC races.
