The South America continent is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Caribbean Sea lies to the northwest and that may be a possible reason when runners from this continent jump up and thrive at Del Mar.

Don’t be shocked if a couple of runners from South America have coming out parties at the beat this meet. Traditionally, for some reason, horses from that hemisphere have done well at this racing stop over the decades.

One of the true South American super stars was Bayakoa, who won a couple of Eclipse Awards and carried 127 pounds successfully taking the Chula Vista at Del Mar in 1990 under the legendary Laffit Pincay Jr.

Bayakoa was 6 for 8 in her first two racing seasons at Argentina but she excelled once she came to the states. Overall, she won 29 of 39 races, was in the exacta another 9 times, and banked over $2.8 million.

Another S. American horse that was an absolute blur in his native land and in the states was Pico Central.

Although Pico did not score at Del Mar, he ran a creditable third to Kela in the Grade 2 O’Brien, and went
to New York to take the Met Mile and the Vosburgh.

Everybody loves a parade and those that bet on Star Parade, an Argentinean monster, in her racing days, were rewarded more often than not. She burst on to the scene for Darrell Vienna in 2003 taking an entry level allowance at Del Mar in her first start in the states.

If fact, don’t under estimate any of Vienna’s runners. The lawyer doesn’t saddle many any longer but he can pop at a price. In his career he is a $16% trainer and his starters have earned over $33 million in purses.

Vienna is not averse to giving a horse a race and is much better with 2nd time starters but doesn’t usually start a lot of youngsters. When he stretches a runner out, pay special attention and he is just as adept with runners going route to sprint.

When Vienna changes surfaces he can be very potent. Turf to dirt maneuvers have been profitable for him over the years and he is also great with sprint to route runners.

This trainer also knows how to get horses fit without showing a great deal of form. When he moves a horse from turf to the synthetic he can surprise at a price.

The S. American influence has already been felt this meet as Richard Mandella’s student Indy Point, an Argentinean runner. This colt had not raced since December, but that didn’t stop him from winning his stateside debut at Del Mar on July 24.

He was proven off the vacation having won a Group 2 in his native land in 2012 and with Gary Stevens steering, this guy was just tapped with the whip when he went on to win the Wickerr Stakes.

The talented and improving charge improved his record to 6 for 13 and he has already earned over $500,000. Only serious horses are in the money every time and Indy has never been worse that third. The runner can be quirky, he runs with his head sideways, but Stevens caught his races on Youtube and was ready for anything.

This runner has to be followed. Mandella plays things close to the vest but he may aim this runner for the Pacific Classic and if he does, the runner will be live.
