Super Derby Stakes Betting – Departing Struts His Stuff In Louisiana

Posted by on 9/4/2013 7:50:55 PM

Fans of sports betting and horse racing should be lining for the Grade-2 Super Derby this Saturday in Louisiana, and this race is run over 1 1/8 miles on dirt. There are a couple of horses that stand out from the rest, but look for Departing to depart from the track with first place.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, September 7th, post time TBA
Where: Louisiana Downs, Bossier City, LA
Pick: Departing

(Status listed, please confirm final entry list)

Bashaar (probable) will be making his debut at Louisiana Downs and his 10th career start this weekend, which follows a fourth-place result in the Grade-2 Jim Dandy Stakes in June. This horse steadily improves as he finished 11th in his first-ever race in November 12th, then won two in a row (a maiden in his fourth try and then an allowance race). After a ninth in the Grade-2 American Turf in May, this three-year-old hasn’t finished worse than fourth in three starts. Horse betting players should keep an eye on this colt.

Cameo Appearance (probable) has never run a graded-stakes race, but he did finish a respectable third in the non-graded Straight Line Stakes at Arlington Park last month. This will also be the first time that this three-year-old has run on dirt, but he has a Hall of Fame trainer in Bob Baffert, who won this race with Prayer for Relief in 2011. Will Cameo Appearance be able to keep up with this solid field of horses? We’ll see on Saturday.

Departing (probable) is coming off a victory in the Grade-2 West Virginia Derby last month, beating out a very good field of horses, and he also took the Grade-3 Illinois Derby in April. He also has a trainer in Albert Stall Jr. that has won this race in the past, in My Pal Charlie in 2008. This gelding will likely end up near the top of the horse betting odds for this race, and he has raced against a lot of good horses, so the pressure is on for Departing to seize the moment.

Holiday Mischief (probable) has run in four non-graded stakes races, finishing no lower than sixth with a best of second, and now he gets his biggest test as he has never run over a mile. At least he is used to dirt, but this colt has also never run against a group like this before, although he has to start sometime. Holiday Mischief could be worth throwing down a wager on, at least to place.

Nutty Brown (possible) doesn’t have much experience at all as this would be his fourth career start and obviously, first in a graded-stakes race. He has finished second and fifth in a pair of maiden races and then he came in fifth at the non-graded Louisiana Legends Mile Colts and Geldings, but Nutty Brown could have the crowd behind him as he was bred in the state. It would be a sizable upset if he were to beat the field to the finish line, but Nutty Brown could be in the mix to make a lot of horse betting sharps very happy.

Ruler Of Love (possible) finished second to Departing in the West Virginia Derby, and it was his fourth consecutive finish of either second or third. In nine career starts, he has finished outside the top three just twice in all types of races, from maiden to Grade-2 events and as the West Virginia Derby showed, he could hold his own against a talented field. Don’t be surprised if Ruler Of Love makes the jump to the next level.

Runaway Stephen (probable) has never run in any sort of race, so he is definitely going to end up on the bottom end of the horse betting odds for the Super Derby. There isn’t a lot of information on this colt other than, he is from Kentucky and trained by Joseph Foster, a Louisiana native. It would be a big risk to wager on this colt.

Treasury Bill (probable) has been inconsistent in 2013, winning his maiden in January, but has finished from second to 10th in his next five starts and three of his last four results have been eighth or worse. However, he finished second in the Grade-2 San Vicente in March, so there is potential there. He is another horse trained by Louisiana native Wayne Catalano, so there could be some support for the hometown guy.

How It Will Play Out

Departing’s experience in big races will pay off as he should be your Super Derby online betting pick on Saturday.
