Travers Stakes Betting – Orb Racks Up A Huge Victory At Saratoga

Posted by on 8/21/2013 10:20:38 PM

Sports betting players that follow horse racing in the summer know all about the Grade-1 Travers Stakes, and the 144th edition of this race for three-year-olds will be run over 1 ¼ miles on dirt. You won’t find a race much bigger at Saratoga Race Course, and one of the favorites for Horse of the Year will add another accolade to his resume as Orb will claim the victory.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, August 24th, post time TBA
Where: Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY
Pick: Orb

After a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, Golden Soul has struggled immensely with a ninth in the Belmont Stakes and then a seventh in the Grade-1 Haskell Invitational. This will tell us a lot about what we need to know about this three-year-old colt: was the Kentucky Derby just a fluke, or did trainer Dallas Stewart push him too hard to get him ready for Churchill Downs, thus burning him out for the rest of the year?

Moreno followed up a win in the Grade-2 Dwyer Stakes with a third in the Grade-2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, coming behind Palace Malice and Will Take Charge. It was a very encouraging performance for this three-year-old colt, but this is going to be a huge gauge of his value in the horse betting world. This is a loaded field of three-year-olds and Moreno will need the race of his life on Saturday.

Palace Malice backed up his victory in the Belmont Stakes by winning the Jim Dandy, and that win really opened up a lot of doors for this Todd Pletcher-trained thoroughbred. The goal is to get him into the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November, while he will probably run in either the Grade-2 Pennsylvania Derby or the Grade-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup next month. A win in the Travers, and Palace Malice could spark some Horse of the Year talk.

Orb had a brilliant Triple Crown season, winning the Kentucky Derby, finishing fourth in the Preakness Stakes and then third in the Belmont. He has been rested since the Belmont, so he should have fresh legs and Orb is another horse that is on track to get into the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This makes the Travers an important race for this colt, and he’ll earn a few looks from horse betting sharps on Saturday.

Romansh has made just four starts and this will be his graded-stakes debut after winning the non-graded Curlin’ Stakes at Saratoga. He’ll probably be a horse betting longshot on Saturday, but trainer Thomas Albertrani has won this race before, with Bernardini in 2006. This is a major step up in competition for Romansh, so don’t expect too much.

Transparent also took part in the Curlin’ Stakes and he finished fifth, so he’ll have longer odds than Romansh. In his first graded-stakes race back in March, Transparent finished sixth in the Grade-3 Gotham Stakes, so he is going to have an uphill climb. But like Romansh, Transparent has a trainer that has won this race before: Kiaran McLaughlin was behind Alpha’s tie with Golden Ticket last year.

Verrazano has six wins in seven career starts, including a victory in the Haskell Invitational, but that 14th-place result in the Kentucky Derby sticks out like a sore thumb and you know Pletcher would love to erase that with another Grade-1 win. Pletcher is going for his third win in the Travers after a victory with Flower Alley in 2005, and then Stay Thirsty in 2011, but this race may be bigger for Verrazano, another horse slated for the Classic.

War Dancer finished third in the Grade-2 American Turf in May, and then won the Grade-2 Virginia Derby in July, so he is an intriguing option for horse betting players. This will be the best field that War Dancer has ever faced, but he has stepped up to the challenge so far and could be worth a wager to at least place.

Will Take Charge’s runner-up in the Jim Dandy was much needed after a middling Triple Crown season: an eighth in the Kentucky Derby, a seventh in the Preakness and a 10th in the Belmont. This is a talented horse, but he may not be an elite horse and he’ll need to be to win the Travers.

How It Will Play Out

Orb has been the most consistent horse all season long, and he’ll beat out the field to an online betting victory on Saturday.
