D. WAYNE’S IN CHARGE

Posted by on 8/28/2013 8:23:06 PM

You can never underestimate the heart of a champion or a Hall of Fame trainer as all online sports betting site players witnessed Saturday as D. Wayne Lukas’s student Will Take Charge won the Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

In a race that appeared loaded with speed, 2-time winner Moreno nearly blew up the tote board at 31-1. He out gunned the favorite Verrazano for the lead, lost it briefly at the top of the lane to Kentucky Derby winner Orb, and then battled on only to be beaten a nose by Will Take Charge.

For Lukas, hockey sticks old at 77, this was his second major upset of the season as his Oxbow won the Preakness at 15-1.

Obviously, this was not Lukas’s first rodeo as he won the Travers in 1991 and again 4 years later.

What this win did for Will Take Charge is throw the entire championship title up in the air. Five different horses won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, Haskell and now the Travers so the kingpin will be realized in the next several weeks.

For such a high-profile race, the splits were moderate as Moreno carved out a :48.88, 1:13.43 and 1:37.47 pace in an evenly-run event and with the top 2 choices out of the money, the trifecta came back huge.

Will Take Charge paid $21.20 to win and Orb completed the trifecta, which paid $1950.

Lukas explained his strategy after the race, Lukas: “ It feels pretty good. They were reminding me it has been a long time between drinks but when they come like this, they come as doubles. I changed a few things up. I took a chance and on up-and-coming rider (Luis Saez). I thought my horse trained well, but these things are tough. At the three-eighths pole, I thought we’d get a piece but I didn’t know if we’d get up. This is horse that is going to get better, he’s getting his act together.”

For Will Take Charge, his future is so bright he may have to wear shades. Out of the multiple Grade 1 winning dam and over $2.4 million earner Take Charge Lady, Will Take Charge has a right to mature with age.

His half brother Take Charge Indy won a Grade 2 and was Grade 1 placed at 4 on way to earning over $1.1 million.

As for Moreno, he gets his talented blood for sire and monster runner Ghostzapper. Out of an unraced dam, Moreno has star quality if you go deep enough in the pedigree.

His dam is kin to an over $100,000 earner and his third dam Dance Smartly took the Breeder’s Cup Distaff, earned over $3 million and foaled Grade 1 winner and over $1.6 million earner Dancethruthedawn.

What’s next on the slate for the sophomore set? The Travers winner and Moreno will be pointed for the Pennsylvania Derby while Orb and Palace Music (4th in Travers) could show up in the Jockey Club Gold Cup as action heads to the fall.

Some people try to evaluate 3-year-olds early in the year as far as the strength of crop, but now is when the rubber meets the road, as the youngsters get ready to try older horses.

Online sports betting enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting fall season.
