Delaware Handicap Betting – Royal Delta Defends Her Title At Delaware Park

Posted by on 7/18/2013 7:20:06 PM

Making sports betting picks on female thoroughbred horse racing can be tough as they don’t get the same attention as the males, much like in other sports, but it can definitely be exciting and this Saturday’s Delaware Handicap could be the best race you see all summer. Run over 1 ¼ miles on dirt at Delaware Park, you should be seeing some excellent racehorses this weekend.

One mare has stood above all others over the last couple of years, and she should be able to add another accolade to her resume as Royal Delta will come away with the victory here just like she did in 2012.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, July 20th, post time TBA
Where: Delaware Park Racetrack, Wilmington, DE
Pick: Royal Delta

(Statuses as of Wednesday, July 17th)

Bryan’s Jewel (probable) is coming off a victory in the Grade-3 Obeah last month, her second win in 11 career starts, but that did follow a second in the ungraded Winter Melody in May, and also at Delaware Park. This five-year-old mare has made two other starts in a Grade-1 race, finishing fifth in the Apple Blossom back in April and seventh in the Gazelle Handicap last November. Bryan’s Jewel could offer up some decent horse betting odds, but can she handle the top horses here?

There were Dance Card (probable) for the 2013 season after she had four victories and a second-place finish after her first five starts last year, including a massive win in the Gazelle Handicap. Then it was announced that the four-year-old filly needed surgery on her two front ankles. She makes her debut this season with some high expectations, but coming off a procedure such as ankle surgery, there are going to be some horse betting sharps that will be skeptical of Dance Card. There will be a lot of interest in this horse when this race begins.

My Miss Aurelia (possible) reeled off six straight wins to start her career before a second-place result in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic in November, and since then, she has a pair of thirds in the Grade-1 La Brea and the Grade-3 Azeri in December and March, respectively. Maybe this four-year-old filly just needed some time to recharge her batteries after a busy 2013 and she is definitely going to be one to watch should trainer Steve Asmussen decide to enter her in this race. She has the talent, but does she have anything left in the tank?

Royal Delta (possible) would probably be the horse betting favorite when the odds come out for this event, that is, if trainer Bill Mott decides to give her a run. Royal Delta has made 18 starts and has racked up 10 wins, and some of those wins have been pretty big: going back-to-back in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic in 2011 and 2012 with an eye on doing it again later this year, along with the Alabama Stakes and the Beldame (two Grade-1 races). She is also the defending champion in this event, and Royal Delta also finished second in the Grade-2 Fleur De Lis Handicap, a race she won in 2011 and her worst finishes have come at the Dubai World Cup, a race with male horses. When it comes to her own sex, this five-year-old mare is a force to be reckoned with.

Tiz Miz Sue (probable) has plenty of experience under her saddle as this will be her 28th start, and she will be going for her eighth victory. She has some unfinished business left on the table after finishing second to Royal Delta in this race last year and Tiz Miz Sue has been on fire in 2013 so far, posting two wins (the Grade-1 Ogden-Phipps Handicap and the Azeri), a second (the Apple Blossom) and a third (the ungraded Bayoka). As long as you’re always in contention, you’re going to have a chance and the horse betting world could do a lot worse than a rematch between Royal Delta and Tiz Miz Sue.

How It Will Play Out

If these are the horses that are entered in this race, you should be in a crazy show as it is a very strong field. But the class usually rises to the top and it’s tough to wager against Royal Delta, given her resume, although keep an eye out for Tiz Miz Sue and even My Miss Aurelia. We’re taking Royal Delta with our online betting pick.
