Horse Racing Betting - Behind The Scenes

When online sports betting players try to stay one step ahead of the masses, it can be all about gathering the news behind the scenes as much as analyzing past performances daily.

On the West Coast, news pours out of the backstretch at Santa Anita like water from a waterfall and here are some of the tidbits that may pay dividends down the line for those that like to step up to the window.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint champ was a recent scratch from the Grade 2 Palos Verde Stakes but it was not a physical thing. The overnight rains caused the track at Santa Anita to be sealed and trainer Bill Spawr did not want to tax his star on that kind of a surface so early in this season’s campaign.

The next logical local option to bet on sports for the speedball would be the $200,000 Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at 7 furlongs on February 25 but if Spawr wants to travel, he could opt for the Grade 3 $150,000 Toboggan at Aquduct on February 4 at 6 furlongs.

As the race nears don’t be too harsh on how fast this guy trains up to the race as Spawr seldom asks his runners for speed in the a.m. If the runner does happen to show speed that could mean his is ready to run through the roof.

Speaking about this stable, Spawr’s student  Ismene, who won the California Breeder’s Champion Stakes will be given time after recovering from a minor chip that was removed from her knee. Being patient, expect this gal to be given plenty of time to tell the trainer when she is ready to compete.

Some rider’s misfortune is another’s gain and that has been the case with Victor Espinoza and David Flores. Since Garrett Gomez went out with a broken heel, they both have taken advantage and are getting into some good barns.
Flores is doing it with limited sportsbooks action but he won with 10 of his first 55 mounts to be one of the leaders in the clubhouse percentage wise.

While on the subject of riders, two value guys have emerged from the Santa Anita colony. Edwin Maldonado won with 5 of his first 37 mounts but his average winner paid nearly $30 and he did not ride one favorite. And apprentice Eswan Flores is improving by the hour it seems.

Flores reached the charmed circle in 9 of his first 67 mounts and his average winner paid over $26.
As expect Joel Rosario and Rafael Bejarano are leading the league among riders. Rosario puts his horses into the race early and often and Bejarano does it with homework away from the track.

Last fall trainer Mike Machowsky was on the same flight as Bejarano and the rider shocked the trainer with his preparedness as told in the Santa Anita Notes.

Machowsky: “We were on the red-eye and he was sitting there with his mom and I asked him how many races he was riding in the Cup. He told me 8 and showed me the past performances. He pulled them out; he had each in a spiral notebook with notes next to each horse. That’s something you’d expect to see from (Super Bowl quarterbacks) Tom Brady and Eli Manning.”
