Coast-to-Coast Clues

With the 4th of July holiday looming, when every track in the country will be rolling out the red carpet for the best horses they can entice, let’s take a look at some interesting things happening around the country that can help cash some tickets this weekend.

At Gulfstream in Florida, Tyler Gaffalione is running away with the riding title but there is a resurgence in the standings too. Edgar Prado, who has been around for decades, is popping at 17th and is 8th overall in the standings.

Kirk Ziadie is having of those dream meetings training at Gulfstream as he has won with 21 of his first 43 starters this meet for a 49% slate. That kind if number is seldom achieved.

A pair of trainers that don’t send out a lot of horses have to be respected every day. Peter Walder and Jorge Navarro are hitting at 29 and 37% respectively and it is no fluke.

On the July 4th card, Javier Castellano will take the mount on Wildcat Red in the $250,000 Smile Sprint and that runner will be a handful. Castellano rides Gulfstream as well as any man alive.

One of the best ways to get a leg up on the competition is to think outside the box a bit when looking at connections at the track. If a player is just going to get the top trainer and top rider value in the long run is not going to be there.

But if one can stretch the box and take a look at some barns that don’t send out a lot of horses but just win races, than that strategy can lead to quick success.

Wayne Catalano has won races around the country. He’s won Breeders’ Cup races, owned the track known as Arlington and has been around the game for decades but the players at the shore at Monmouth Park have not gotten the memo so far.

This meet Catalano has won with 5 of his first 9 starters and 2 others ran in the money. Chuck Spina is not far behind either as he has won with 4 of his first 16 runners.

Jersey Joe Bravo owned Monmouth for years but he has not had that many mounts this season. He still is 7th in the standings and has only had 72 mounts.

The Windy City boasts one of the best venues in all of America in Arlington Park and like the great Seabiscuit overcame adversity and thrived to show it to all the fans, Arlington has done the same things.

Larry Rivelli is having a dream meet in Chicago but there are some other trainers that rate long looks. Mike Stidham is hitting at 30%, Scott Becker has hit with 11 of his first 44 Arlington starters and the little trainer Gerald Aschinger has only sent out 13 starters this meet but he greeted 5 back in the winner’s circle.

At Arlington keep an eye on Scatter Gun. The runner raced once last fall and ran second and drilled the other day in :46.80, the best of the morning performance.

This filly is out of an unraced dam but the dam is kin to four 6-figure earners including Grade 3 winner and over $500,000 earner Primitive Hall.
