SPLITTING ACES

Posted by on 7/16/2013 7:37:57 PM

What: Split Oceanside Stakes
Who:  In 6th (box in exacta, Examen, Undrafted, Manando and Gervinho)  In 9th (box in exacta Gabriel Charles, Si Sage, Den’s Legacy and Rosengold)
Where: Del Mar
When: Wednesday, July 17

Splitting aces in blackjack is a no brainer and this year, like in most on opening day at Del Mar; the traditional Oceanside Stakes Wednesday is split into 2 divisions.

It will go as the 6th and 9th races at a mile on grass carrying a $100,000 purse.

In the 6th, Examen is trained by the cagey Tom Proctor and saddles a runner that is coming off a layoff since April. This sophomore is proven fresh on grass, has an ideal stalk and pounce style and has trained like a Swiss clock for this race.

Tried on the Triple Crown Trail in the Lexington this year, the runner was steadied that day and has been pointed for this race.

The Lexington also came back live as the 4th finisher took a $75,000 stakes next out and the place horse took the Grade 3 Arlington Classic.
This runner has live wire written all over him.

Undrafted, owned by Denver Broncos NFL player Wes Walker, is a perfect 2 for 2 on grass and is coming off a 10-length win at Churchill with a 92 Beyer Speed Figure.

This Grade 2 placed runner is trained by Wesley Ward, who is very good with young stock.

If Bob Baffert’s student Manando takes to grass, the rest may be running for minor awards.

He has trained fast for this event at Santa Anita and like the fact that Baffert got him to Del Mar early enough to work locally last Saturday.

This son of Bluegrass Cat can give you a :44 and change half if in the mood, has clearly the highest career Beyer of 108 and might be long gone.

Use Manando in an exacta box with Undrafted, Examen and Gervinho.

In the 9th race, Gabriel Charles will be making his first start of the year. He won his racing debut at Del Mar on the Polytrack and won his only turf races in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint on the Anita hillside last fall.

Si Sage rates a glance as a long shot. He has only been out of the money twice in his career, is in the very cagey hands of Darrell Vienna, and he showed tactical speed in France that should bode well in this race.

Den’s Legacy is one for 2 on grass but the win came in a Grade 3 event. He was only beaten 2 lengths by Preakness winner Oxbow and he will benefit by what should be a hot and heavy pace.

Rosengold has run only one poor race and he was hung outside that day in his racing debut. He is unbeaten on grass, winning all three of his starts in stakes company. Trained by the affable Julio Canani, this runner has a right to mature with class, as he is kin to Group 2 winner and over $225,000 earner Prussian Blue.

Box Rosengold, Den’s Legacy, Si Sage and Gabriel Charles in the exacta and good luck in your racebook.
