Coast-to-Coast Review

With just a few weeks left at both Del Mar and Saratoga let’s take a look at some of the stables that figure to continue hot and some of them that figure to get hot.

First, let’s tackle upstate New York and check in with the action at the Spa.

At Saratoga this year, Todd Pletcher, who else, is the leading trainer as far as money won. After 83 starts and 21 wins, his trainees have earned over $2.2 million but Chad Brown is not far behind.

Brown, who learned for years under the watchful eye of Bobby Frankel, is popping at a clever 28% and is tied with Pletcher for the leader among conditioners.

A trainer that is winning with everything that is not nailed down is Kiaran McLaughlin. Of his first 25 starters, he met 10 of them back in the winner’s circle for a 40% clip and 72% of his starters have run in the money.

That’s consistency.

The other usual suspects, Bill Mott, Shug McGaughey, and Cristophe Clement have been solid all season and figure to end the meet strong.

There are also several trainers at Saratoga that have been a bit snake bitten and are due to break out in a big way.

Wesley Ward , who is super with young stock and not afraid to be aggressive in his placements, is off to a very poor start at 3 for 39 and is due to pick it up.

George Weaver , who has big meets at Saratoga over the years and learned his craft at the foot of D. Wayne Lukas and Pletcher, only won with 3 of his first 37 starters and is due to break out.

Those 2 trainers, along with James Jerkens, Ken McPeek and James Bond should be a force in the final few weeks of the meet.

Out West at Del Mar, Peter Miller points for this meet year in and year out but he has had a bit of seconditis. He has only won with 11 of his first 81 starters but 24 of his trainees had to accept minor awards.

After a poor start, Doug O’Neill has picked up the tempo but one hot trainer that should stay hot is John Sadler, who won with 9 of his first 32 starters.

Jeff Mullins kicked off the meet winning on opening day and he cashed with 5 of his first 18 starters. Bill Spawr, who also points for this meet for winning and a little R and R, has won with 4 of his first 18 starters and 4 ran second.

Some solid SoCal trainers have been on the schneid and are due to break out. High quality conditioners like Marty Jones, Paddy Gallagher, Hector Palma, Kristen Mullhal and Mike Pender probably a few aces up their sleeves before the curtain comes down on the season.

As far as how Del Mar is playing, the track has been taxing on runners and starters that have cut back in distance have had an edge on some of the sprinters.

Don’t be afraid to dip in on a closer if he gets a good post and there is plenty of speed in the fray.
