Noble Tune Plays A Mean Tune On Turf

Posted by Marco Sussman on 5/30/2013 7:55:07 PM

The sports betting action doesn’t stop now that the Triple Crown races are over as the Penn Mile gets underway this Saturday. This mile-long race is run on turf as we could get to see a few of the horses that you’ll hear about in the run-up to the Breeders Cup and while Charming Kitten has a high-profile trainer in Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown will look to upstage Pletcher with Noble Turf in what should be an outstanding showdown at Penn National.

This is the first edition of the Penn Mile, the richest event ever held at this race track, so there is the chance for a little history to be made on Saturday.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, June 1st, post time TBA
Where: Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, Grantville, PA
Pick: Noble Tune

Are You Kidding Me fell off the Kentucky Derby trail with an eighth in the Grade-1 Florida Derby and is coming off a third in an allowance race at Keeneland, so there isn’t a lot of pressure on this colt that has much better results on turf than on dirt. He did finish second in the Grade-2 Summer Stakes (another mile-long turf event) at Woodbine last September.

Charming Kitten is probably going to be the horse betting favorite in the field, even after coming in ninth at the Kentucky Derby. He hasn’t run a race since, so he should be well-rested. Charming Kitten hasn’t finished lower than third in five starts on turf, including a win in the non-graded Kitten’s Joy Stakes at Gulfstream Park in January.

Jack Milton has two wins in three starts, although that win came in the Grade-3 Transylvania Stakes. Still, that was his graded-stakes debut and all three of his starts have come on turf, so Jack Milton is used to the surface and could be a horse to watch on turf throughout the season.

Another one to watch is Noble Tune, which now has four wins in five starts after taking the Grade-2 American Turf earlier this month. Noble Tune also finished second at the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf last November, so this is a horse that has been making his rounds and he could give Charming Kitten a real run for his money.

Pitch N Roll will be making his graded-stakes debut after running in three non-graded events, putting up a second, a third and a fifth. However, he has never run longer than 6 ½ furlongs and this will be his first start on turf, so horse betting sharps shouldn’t expect a lot from Pitch N Roll, unless he decides to show us something new. But you never know in the world of thoroughbred horse racing, and this could be the next turf superstar.

Rydilluc has been out of action since the Grade-1 Blue Grass in which he finished fourth, and he has won three of his five starts in total. He does have a victory in the Grade-3 Palm Beach, which is run on turf and that is where all three of his wins have come, so Rydilluc could be looking to make a statement early on turf.

Triple Cross has made eight starts, finishing third or better in five starts, but his lone win came in an allowance race in his debut back in June of 2012. In two graded-stakes starts, Triple Cross hasn’t finished higher than eighth and this is only his third start on turf, so this may be a horse to avoid when looking up the horse betting odds for the Penn Mile.

Yougotthatgoinforu rounds out the field with his third career start after a fourth-place result in the non-graded Miracle Wood, and this will be his first test on turf, so this horse is a bit of an unknown. That means his odds will be a mystery, but at least he has a win at this track from his past as Yougotthatgoinforu took an allowance race here in December.

How It Will Play Out

This is shaping up to be a one-on-one race down the stretch between Charming Kitten and Noble Tune, but the latter will edge out a victory and get the turf season kicked off with a bang by taking the spoilers. This won’t be the first time that you hear about these two going at it this summer, but by the narrowest of margins, take Noble Tune in your online betting picks on Saturday.
