Hurry Up and Wait

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 4/12/2010 11:34:05 AM

Besides being a single by the Welsh rock band Stereophonics, ‘hurry up and wait’ is a term regarding the U.S. Army in that everyone is in a rush to go somewhere, only to wait for orders. That’s pretty much the deal now with over 2 weeks before the money is down at Churchill.

Here, the ‘hurry up and wait’ theme is about the now 19 days to enjoy the passage of time before they play ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ in the post parade before the Kentucky Derby.

The winners last week of the Blue Grass, Stately Victor and the Arkansas Derby, Line of David, will likely be heading to Kentucky but they didn’t exactly put a dent into the armor of probable Kentucky Derby chalk Eskendereya.

The winners of the final 2 preps were prices but will be factors with two very different styles.

The Blue Grass, although a 40-1 dart, should offer the most argument.

Stately Victor, who got a Beyer figure of 94, has a style that screams classic distance and he is in the right barn of Barbaro’s mentor Michael Matz.

Jon Court gave Arkansas Derby hero Line of David ( recorded a 98 Beyer) an absolutely perfect ride. He opened up off legit splits, just held it together, and showed grit in the process. The concern is that he appears to be need the lead type and with a ton of speed projected in the Derby in May, that’s not good.

Now, for the handlers and the conditioners of the runners aiming for the Derby, it’s about waiting, keeping their horses happy, and hoping that when they go to the barn every morning about 5 a.m. that all is right with the world.

At this point, depending on the post position draw, Eskendereya is probably going to be about 5-2 or a fat 2-1 at post time for the Derby. Considering the difficulty of beating 19 rivals before nearly 150,000, the task will not be easy but the Todd Pletcher trainee took his final prep in the Wood Memorial with a 109 Beyer without being asked for his best.

Projected second choice here is Lookin at Lucky with Santa Anita Derby winner Sidney’s Candy a close third choice in the betting at this point.

Lucky has been anything but of late but he showed some class in his Arcadia finale despite the horrible trip and fans will put high value on the fact he was the juvenile champ.

Candy was dandy controlling the pace and the outcome in his coming out party, but as we all know, the pace of the Derby can be hectic and out of control and sometimes a rank outsider will flash speed and change the way the race unfolds.

Two closers that could fly under the radar but must be respected are Interactif and Stately Victor. The former was a game second to Candy in the San Felipe while the latter seems to be peaking at the right time and figures to get a very fast pace to attempt to rally into.
