Departing Steals The Show At Hawthorne

Posted by Marco Sussman on 4/18/2013 7:30:53 PM

Sports betting sharps are getting closer to the Kentucky Derby, but first they must stop at the Grade-3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course. The field features some talented thoroughbreds, but look for Departing to outshine them all.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, April 20th, post time TBA
Where: Hawthorne Race Course, Stickney/Cicero, IL
Pick: Departing

(All horses are probable or possible for this race as of Wednesday, April 17th)

Abraham put on a good show in his first graded-stakes event, finishing third in the Grade-3 Sunland Derby on March 24th. He has had John Velasquez on his back for all three starts (he needed two tries to break his maiden), so continuity could be a key to the Todd Pletcher-trained Abraham pulling off a minor upset on Saturday.

Abstraction is making his graded-stakes debut after breaking his maiden on the second try, and like Abraham, he has only known one jockey in Leandro Gonclaves and trainer David Carroll may look to keep it the same. It’ll be interesting to see how this colt handles the increase in distance as he takes on a tough field.

Carried Interest has made four starts, but only one was in a graded-stakes race (a second in the Grade-2 Futurity last September) and he has finished second in two allowance races this year. Carried Interest is highly rated, but can he turn that into a horse betting victory on Saturday?

Departing is another horse that many think highly of, and after three wins to start his career, he finished third in the Grade-2 Louisiana Derby on March 30th. Brian Hernandez has been in the saddle for all four starts, and trainer Albert Stall would probably be looking to keep it the same.

Dewey Square poses questions to horse betting sharps as he started off with two wins in two starts, then finished third in the Grade-2 Kentucky Jockey Club in November. But 2013 hasn’t been so kind to the colt as he finished seventh in the Grade-3 Holly Bull Stakes in January and then fifth in the Grade-3 Palm Beach Stakes on March 3rd. Which version of Dewey Square will show up on Saturday?

For Greater Glory is also coming off a disappointing finish, rolling in sixth in the Grade-3 Spiral Stakes after needing four tries to break his maiden, then finishing third in the non-graded John Battaglia on March 2nd. This thoroughbred struggled when stepping up in competition and that isn’t encouraging to trainer Steve Hobby.

Speaking of disappointing finishes, Freedom Child stumbled home to a 10th-place finish in the Grade-1 Wood Memorial and the colt may be out of his element in these types of races. He needed four tries to break his maiden (with four different jockeys) and trainer Thomas Albertrani may be looking at a more long-term picture for this horse.
Gunderman is making his ninth career starts, but seven have been either maiden or allowance races, and he finished sixth in the non-graded Display Stakes in December. This is another colt that will probably be considered a horse betting longshot for this race, so don’t put a lot of stock in Gunderman.

Incognito has won his last two starts, although they were in a maiden (on his fourth try) and an allowance race, so don’t get too fired up about his chances yet. Michael Luzzi has been on board for all five starts, which have all come at Aqueduct, but Incognito is probably in over his head for the Illinois Derby.

Narvaez was thrown into the Grade-1 Florida Derby and came away with a fourth-place result, which isn’t bad considering it was his graded-stakes debut. Another solid run and Narvaez could be in for another start in a Derby prep race, although time is running out.

Positively has alternated between second and seventh-place finishes for the last five races, and even though he is probably the highest-rated horse in the field, he is incredibly inconsistent and it’s tough to back a horse like that.

Show Some Magic finished second in the Sunland Derby, which was encouraging after struggling with finishes of fifth and ninth in his first two graded-stakes starts, which came in 2012. This will be the 12th start of his career, but Show Some Magic has faltered in major races; maybe the Sunland Derby stirred something in this thoroughbred.

Siete De Oros hasn’t finished lower than fourth in four starts, and three of them have been in graded-stakes races (he raced in a handicap event as well). This could be a horse that surprises some horse betting players as Siete de Oros has seen good competition and kept up with it, which is all he needs to do until the homestretch on Saturday.

Finally, The Truth And K G finished third in the Grade-3 Bay Shore, his first graded-stakes race and that’s impressive, but he has never run longer than seven furlongs and the distance could be a little too much for him as he fades down the stretch.

How It Will Play Out

It could go to any of four horses (Positively, Carried Interest, Departing or Dewey Square), but thanks to his strong showing at the Louisiana Derby, Departing should be your online betting pick.
