Indiana Derby Betting Tips – Fed Biz Holds Off Strong Field In Indiana Derby

Posted by Marco Sussman on 10/4/2012 6:44:06 PM

Sports betting sharps that follow horse racing are making their way towards the Breeders Cup in November, which makes races like the Grade-2 Indiana Derby much more important as you can get a preliminary read on the horses. On Saturday at Hoosier Park, Fed Biz is the play to make.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, October 6th, post time TBA
Where: Hoosier Park, Anderson, IN
Pick: Fed Biz

Adirondack King hasn’t finished higher than third in a race this year, and he is coming off a disappointing eighth-place run in the non-graded James W. Murphy Stakes in May. He could be a little rusty, but some horse betting players think he could be a decent darkhorse to ride on Saturday.

Afford has finished higher than fourth just once in 2012, and that was in an allowance race at Churchill Downs. He has made two graded-stakes starts, finishing sixth in the Grade-2 Risen Star and then seventh in the Grade-2 Louisiana Derby. The Indiana Derby is a Grade-2 race, so Afford may be in over his head.

Bourbon Courage is one of the horses to watch after a win in the Grade-2 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs last month, and in four graded-stakes races, he has finished first or second in the last two starts. He is aiming for the Dirt Mile race in the Breeders Cup in November, and this race (1 1/16 miles on dirt) is right up his alley.

Easter Gift won the Grade-3 Smarty Jones Stakes at Philadelphia Park last month, and this is the next step for this three-year-old colt, whose handlers may be hoping for rain because this horse performs well on a sloppy track.

Fed Biz seems to be the other thoroughbred, alongside Bourbon Courage, that horse betting players should keep an eye on after he rolled to a victory in the non-graded El Cajon at Del Mar in late August. He is trained by Bob Baffert, the legendary trainer who has won two of the last three Indiana Derbies.

Junebugred came in fourth in the Smarty Jones which was won by Easter Gift, although he did win the non-graded Smarty Jones that took place at Oaklawn Park in January. He is one of the horses looking to crash the Bourbon Courage/Fed Biz party, so keep an eye out for Junebugred.

Morgan’s Guerilla bounced back nicely from an 11th-place run in the Grade-3 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland with a second-place in an allowance race at Churchill Downs in May, then he finished third in the Grade-2 Dwyer at Belmont Park in June. Morgan’s Guerilla has been off since then, so a fast start is imperative to this three-year-old colt.

Six of Neck ‘N’ Neck’s eight starts in 2012 have come in graded-stakes events, and he has a win in the Grade-3 Matt Win at Churchill Downs from June, followed by a second-place result in the Grade-2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga. Neck ‘N’ Neck then came in sixth in the Grade-1 Travers Stakes, also at Saratoga, and this was in late August, so which horse will show up on Saturday?

It took O’Prado Again four tries to win his maiden race, and then he rolled to a victory in the Grade-2 Remsen at Aquaduct last November, but he has yet to hit the track as a three-year-old. His handlers, led by trainer Dale L. Romans, are aiming to enter O’Prado Again in the Dubai World Cup, but that isn’t until next March.

Second City will make his racing debut on Saturday, so that automatically makes him a longshot as there are horses with much more experience, but you never know what is going to happen on the racetrack and the reports are that this three-year-old gelding has some speed.

Stealcase won the Grade-3 Ontario Derby at Woodbine, just outside of Toronto, and it was his first victory in a graded-stakes race. Seven of his nine starts in 2012 have come in graded-stakes events and he has finished in the top three in three of his last four, so this colt could be running on momentum.

Tritap is trained by Steve Asmussen, who prepared Wilburn for victory at last year’s Indiana Derby. But Tritap took four tries to win his maiden and this is his first start in a graded-stakes race, so it could be too much for him. Then again, Asmussen has done a great job in the past of preparing his horses.

How It Will Play Out

Fed Biz and Bourbon Courage are coming off impressive performances, but horses like Easter Gift and Junebugred could make things interesting. In the end, however, look for Baffert to work his magic and help Fed Biz to a huge victory in your online betting picks.
