John C Mabee Handicap Betting Tips – All Star Heart Surges To The Front At Del Mar

Posted by Marco Sussman on 8/7/2012 6:22:07 PM

Online betting players looking to get their thoroughbred horse racing fix this weekend should check out the Grade-2 John C. Mabee Handicap on Sunday in California, and this 1 1/8-mile race with a purse of $250,000 for three-year-old fillies and mares. The winner will get a pass to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf race this November, and that horse would be one that is bounce back from a long layoff.

What: Horse Betting
When: Sunday, August 12th, check for post time
Where: Del Mar Racetrack, Del Mar, CA
Pick: All Star Heart

All Star Heart’s last four starts have come in Grade-2 stakes races, so she should be used to his level of competition and the five-year-old mare has won two of those races. She is coming off a disappointing eighth-place run at the Royal Heroine Stakes last month, but that was her first graded-stakes races first race since November of last year for All Star Heart, and much like an athlete that has to sit on the shelf for a while, horses get rusty. She should be ready to go on Sunday.

Imperialistic Diva hasn’t won in six races and that was a first-place run in an allowance race at Hollywood Park last December. Since then, the four-year-old filly has placed third or better just once and she has had four different jockeys in her last four starts, so that makes it hard to back Imperialistic Diva.

City to City has all kinds of experience and horse betting players are probably familiar with her as the five-year-old mare has made 20 starts, and 15 of them have come in graded-stakes races; all but one was lower than a Grade-2 race. Her last win came at the Grade-2 Buena Vista Stakes in February, but since then City to City has two fourth-place finishes and a pair of seventh-place runs, one of which came at the Grade-2 Royal Heroine States. City to City needs a good showing to break out of her slump, and but it may not come at Del Mar.

Cambina is also in the midst of a lengthy winless skid, although her last win came way back in April of 2011 in the Grade-1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park, a span of eight races, although she is getting closer with second-place runs in two of her last three starts. The four-year-old filly followed up that win in the American Oaks with a fourth-place result in the Grade-1 Del Mar Oaks and Cambiina can improve on that on Sunday.

Byrony has the least experience of the horses that are slated to line up at Del Mar on Sunday as she has seven starts, and none of them have been in graded-stakes races. Her two wins have come in allowance races, both at Hollywood Park, and the four-year-old filly finished second to Broken Dreams in the Osunitas Handicap. Her stable could be bringing her along slowly, but Byrony could come out of nowhere to steal a win this weekend at Del Mar, which is where the Osuintas took place.

Nereid doesn’t have much more experience with eight starts, but unlike Byrony, Nereid has experience in graded-stakes races as her last five starts have come in those events. She won the 2011 American Oaks, which the four-year-old filly followed up with a third-place run in the Del Mar Oaks, but Nereid hasn’t finished higher than fourth in her last two starts. It definitely isn’t time to press the panic button yet when it comes to Nereid, but it is a slippery slope and a top-three finish would be nice.

Be sure that you check out the racebook at BetOnline to confirm the final field before you make your pick, but the strongest horses out there seem to be All Star Heart and Cambina, with City to City and Nereid potential picks to make a little cash on. Roll with All Star Heart, who was rusty at the Royal Heroine Stakes but has since won a non-graded stakes race, and that could be the race to give her some momentum.

Even though the race was downgraded from a Grade-3 event, the John C. Mabee Stakes is still important as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series and the trainers and jockeys at this event know what is on the line. The smart play to make on Sunday is All Star Heart, so remember that name while doing your sports betting.
