Kentucky Derby Betting Tips – Darkhorses To Watch Out For On The Trail To The Kentucky Derby

Posted by Marco Sussman on 2/6/2013 6:22:48 PM

It’s never too early for horse betting players to start thinking about the Kentucky Derby as the first Saturday in May, which is when the “Run for the Roses” is held at Churchill Downs, comes quickly when you’re waiting for Triple Crown season to start.

The prep races are where you see the best of the best preparing for that trip to Louisville, and here are five horses that definitely have the attention of those in the know, but they’re not stars yet and they are names to watch when you’re on the trail to the Kentucky Derby.

Overanalyze

Trainer Todd Pletcher finally broke through for his first Kentucky Derby in 2010 with Super Saver, and he could have another one on his hands with Overanalyze, a horse that has been up and down so far in his career. After winning his maiden last August, this three-year-old colt has made four starts in either Grade-2 or Grade-3 races, posting two wins, but also two finishes of third and fourth. Overanalzye has had three different jockeys in five starts, but three have come with John Velasquez and Pletcher may need to reunite with the 2011 Derby winner to get back to Churchill Downs. Look for this horse at the Grade-3 Gotham Stakes in March and hopefully, the Grade-1 Wood Memorial in April.

Goldencents

Some sports betting sharps looking to wager on the Derby think that Goldencents should be a favorite for the race in May, but there are others that haven’t been impressed by a colt that has three wins in four starts, and the other was a second-place run in the Grade-1 Champagne Stakes last October. Jockey Kevin Krigger has been in the saddle for all four starts, and Doug O’Neill might want to stick with him to get a chance at repeating as the Kentucky Derby champion trainer after winning with I’ll Have Another last year. The goal is to get Goldencents in the Grade-2 San Felipe in March and then the Grade-1 Santa Anita Derby the following month.

Proud Strike

Proud Strike has yet to make a start in a graded-stakes race, but he has been brought along slowly by trainer Steve Asmussen, who has won the Preakness Stakes twice as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but has never won the Kentucky Derby. He broke his maiden on his third try (and first start outside of Churchill Downs) in January, and Brian Hernandez Jr. has been in the saddle for the last two as Proud Strike is getting better and better each time he runs. You may be able to find this colt for good odds because of his slow start, but keep an eye out for Proud Strike at the Grade-2 Risen Star Stakes later this month.

Normandy Invasion

Normandy Invasion is another horse that is en route to start in the Risen Star at Fair Grounds Race Course, and that’ll be his first start since November when he finished second to Overanalyze in the Grade-2 Remsen at Aqueduct. Chad C. Brown’s only major win as a thoroughbred horse trainer came in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2008, and a win in a Triple Crown race would definitely boost his status among horse betting sharps and there is a good chance he’ll stick with Jose Lexcano, who has been with Normandy Invasion for the past two races and there has been a marked improvement in performance and results.  A trip to the Derby isn’t out of the question yet, but this colt will need a very good performance at the Fair Grounds to stay on the radar and after that, anything can happen.

Itsmyluckyday

Itsmyluckyday has been busy throughout his career, making nine starts so far, but only three have come in graded-stakes events. Some may have been down on Itsmyluckyday after he finished sixth in the Grade-3 Delta Downs Jackpot last November and then he followed it up with a fourth-place run in the Grade-3 Dania Beach Stakes in December, but the three-year-old campaign has been much better to trainer Edward Plesa Jr. Itsmyluckyday kicked off January by taking the non-graded Gulfstream Park Derby and wrapped up the month by beating Shanghai Bobby in the Grade-3 Holy Bull Stakes, so the horse should be full of confidence. However, that was only the first race for Elvis Trujillo and Itsmyluckyday has had four jockeys in nine starts, so when you’re wagering on the Grade-1 Florida Derby in March, take a look at who is in the saddle before making your online betting pick.
