Oklahoma Derby Betting Tips – Willy Beamin Steps Up On The Big Stage

Posted by Marco Sussman on 9/25/2012 6:41:07 PM

The Oklahoma Derby is a sports betting staple for those that wager on horses as it has been an annual event since 1989 and even though it isn’t a graded-stakes race, it is still the biggest purse to be won at Remington Park and that’ll always get it some attention. This year’s winner is a horse that has been on a roll and will continue it in Oklahoma City.

What: Horse Betting
When: Sunday, September 30th, post time TBA
Where: Remington Park, Oklahoma City, OK
Pick: Willy Beamin

It took Called To Serve four tries to get his maiden win at Santa Anita, then he went on to finish fifth in the Grade-2 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park and then third at the Grade-2 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer last month. Called To Serve seems like he would have some potential, but the three-year-old gelding has been handled by six different jockeys in his six career races. That type of jockey juggling will never allow Called To Serve to experience his potential.

Daddy Nose Best also took four races to win his maiden, and the three-year-old colt has featured in some major races, including a sixth-place finish in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf in 2011, a 10th-place run in the Kentucky Derby and a ninth-place result in the Preakness Stakes. He is coming off a third-place finish in the Grade-2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes in August, but Daddy Nose Best’s wins in graded-stakes races have come in Grade-3 events.

Diamond Joe will likely be a horse betting underdog in this, his first career race, so there isn’t a lot to go on for this three-year-old gelding, who was bred in Nebraska. You would be taking a risk if you’re going to back Diamond Joe, but if he were to come out on top here, he would be a popular pick heading towards the Breeders Cup in November.

Hero of Order has made 11 starts this season, winning the Grade-2 Louisiana Derby on April Fool’s Day, but then he followed that up with a 13th-place run in the Grade-1 Blue Grass Stakes. Only once since that win at the Fair Grounds has Hero of Order finished inside the top three, but he can move back into the forefront of the minds of horse betting players with a strong performance in Oklahoma City.

Master Rick is another horse that took four tries to win his maiden race, and he followed up a fourth-place run in the Super Derby Prelude by rolling in third in the Grade-2 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. Gerard Melancon has been in the saddle for the last two races, and Master Rick’s handlers would do well to stick with that combination.

Politicallycorrect finished second or third in four straight races in four straight races in the middle of 2012, but then came in seventh in the Grade-2 Amsterdam Stakes and then 11th in the Grade-3 Saranac, both at Saratoga. Some sites enter this Oklahoma Derby with Politicallycorrect as the lowest-rated horse in the field, but you never know what is going to happen on the race track.

Prospective had won three races in a row before finishing eighth in the Grade-2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga, and this trio of wins helped to take the sting out of finishing 18th at the Kentucky Derby. The three-year-old colt has won seven of his 13 career starts, and he will be one of the top horses to watch on Sunday.

Second City doesn’t have the resume that Prospective brings to the table, namely because this is his first start. Like Diamond Joe, there isn’t a lot to know about this three-year-old gelding that was bred in the United States, so tread lightly with this horse.

Speightscity has won twice, in a maiden race and then in an allowance race, and he finished ninth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year. But he is coming off an eighth-place run in the Grade-1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga and is facing a decent field. He’ll have to raise his game to compete with the top horses in this field.

Willy Beamin is the only horse coming into this race off a win as he galloped to victory in the Grade-1 King’s Bishop. It was his seventh win in 11 starts, although four of those came in maiden/allowance/claiming races. In his other four starts, the three-year-old gelding has finished outside the top three, so it is either feast or famine with Willy Beamin.

How It Will Play Out

Willy Beamin is just far too hot right now to ignore and he’ll hold off Daddy Nose Best and Prospective for the win in your online betting picks.
