Online Horse Race Betting - 8 Furlongs For The Glory

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 10/18/2011 5:15:21 PM

This year will be the fifth running of the Dirt Mile, a cool million will be up for grabs and the candidates this year will be hard pressed to top last year’s winner Dakota Phone, who came from dead last to get up by a head as the longest shot on the board.

Before we get into that race, let’s take a glance into the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth 11 Challenge Cup at Keeneland Saturday at 9 furlongs on grass

A classy group of 8 will pit skills headed by the top three finishers, Summer Soiree, Star Billing and Nereid if the Del Mar Oaks.

Winter Memories is fresh from a win in the Grade 1 Garden City and she has the home court thing going on as she won a Grade 3 on this course this spring.

Together kicked too late last year in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf but she has a recent race over the course and has a right to improve.

Marketing Mix is sharp as a tack right now but may be pitched a bit too high.

More Than Real set pedestrian splits last time and could not hold on while Kathmanblu got good for about a month early in the year but has not been able to close the deal since.

The pick is Summer Soiree, who is unbeaten in 2 grass starts, seems to be peaking right now, has only lost once all year and that was when she went too fast early in the Kentucky Oaks.

Love fact she has speed but she doesn’t need to lead to win and she is in the right hands of Graham Motion, who trained Animal Kingdom to win the Kentucky Derby.

Soiree could be long gone.

Back to last year’s Dirt Mile.

Trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer, Dakata Phone rang the bell at 37-1, was coming off a third in the Grade 1 Goodwood and kicked off a superfecta that paid over $36,000.

In a short sample, closers have done well in this race but 12 sophomores have tried to win this event but failed to pull off the feat.

Uncle Mo, with a win in the Kelso, earned a start in the Dirt Mile but his owner is on record as saying he is 90% certain to be point for the Classic.

Jackson Bend was second in the Kelso and he figures to be a legit factor in the Dirt Mile as in Jersey Town, the show runner in the Kelso.

Senior citizen Awesome Gem will be coming hard in this race off a clever second in the Grade 1 Goodwood on October 1. His connections are on the fence at this point and may try to go for all the gusto in the Classic.

Wise Dan is going good right now but he will have to prove he can excel on the main track. He won on the Tapeta at Presque Isle there recently but it’s a whole new thing handling Churchill.

Once again Todd Pletcher could have a couple of bullets for this race. What else is new?

His student Aikenite will have to try to build on his third in the Grade 1 Forego and his speedball Rule will have to try to control the pace and outcome after running third in the Woodwood.

One runner that can’t be counted out is Soaring Empire, although he has beaten softer foes. He scored at Monmouth Park in the Majestic Light Stakes and will have to step up his game.

Soaring Empire also has some upside to him as he has a penchant for finding the wire, is kin to a Grade 2 winner and his winning dam is kin to a pair of Grade 2 winners. He is in the right hands too as Cam Gambolati calls the shots.

Cam knows what to do with a good horse. The former statistician for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trained the 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck.

If the Mike Hushion trainee Rodman is going to succeed in the Dirt Mile, he will have to improve on his fourth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The good news for this runner is that he should be dead fit after that race and he has the tactical speed needed to succeed in this fray.

Rodman, who’s namesake entered the National Basketball Hall of Fame, showed his class with the good second in the Met Mile and he won at this very distance in the 2011 opener.

Rebound anyone?

This race may not entice the cream of the crop, but value should still be there to capitalize on with some luck.
