Orb Captures The Middle Jewel Of The Triple Crown

Posted by Marco Sussman on 5/16/2013 6:31:55 PM

A sports betting favorite actually came through for players in the Kentucky Derby as Orb defeated the field on a rain-soaked track at Churchill Downs. Can he do it again in the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes, the shortest of the Triple Crown races? He looks like a solid bet to come through in the “Run for the Black-eyed Susans”.

What:Horse Betting
When: Saturday, May 18th, post time TBA
Where:Pimlico Race Courtse, Baltimore, MD
Pick: Orb

Departing figures to come into the Preakness trailing only Orb in the odds after skipping the Kentucky Derby to focus on this race. Brian Hernandez Jr. will be in the saddle again for trainer Albert Stall Jr., and they’ll have high hopes for Departing, who has four wins in five starts and is coming off a victory in the Grade-3 Illinois Derby last month.

Goldencents is being tipped for a comeback race after finishing a disappointing 17th at the Kentucky Derby, and trainer Doug O’Neill (who won last year’s Preakness with I’ll Have Another) will go back to jockey Kevin Krigger, who had a difficult time navigating this colt over a sloppy Churchill Downs track. Goldencents should definitely improve on his showing in Louisville, and it could be a good thing that the pressure is off now.

Govenor Charlie sat the Derby out after winning the Grade-3 Sunland Derby, and this horse is backed by a pair of former Preakness winners as jockey Martin Garcia (2010) and trainer Bob Baffert (1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2010) try to add to their resumes. Out of three starts, the Sunland Derby is Govenor Charlie’s lone graded-stakes start and the Preakness is a major step up in competition for the three-year-old.

Itsmyluckyday struggled to a 15th-place result in the Kentucky Derby, but horse betting players should still keep an eye on this colt, which had finished second in the Grade-1 Florida Derby prior to Churchill Downs. John Velasquez will be the fifth jockey to ride Itsmyluckday in 12 starts as he and trainer Edward Plesa Jr. are both looking for their first Preakness victory.

Mylute finished a solid fifth in the Kentucky Derby, and Rosie Napravnik gets another shot in the saddle guiding this horse in Louisville. Some would argue that Mylute’s only wins have come in maiden and allowance races, but he manages to hang around in the graded-stakes races and that will at least give him a shot at reaching the finish line first, so keep this thoroughbred in mind.

Orb will be the horse betting favorite at Pimlico after leaving the field in his dust in the Derby, and many are tipping him to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown. Two horses in the last five years have won the first two jewels in the Crown (Big Brown in 2008, I’ll Have another last year), but if any horse looks capable of running away with the Preakness, it has to be Orb.

Oxbow may have lost a few horse betting sharps after finishing sixth at the Kentucky Derby, and that followed a fifth-place result in the Grade-1 Arkansas Derby. However, he fared well in races that were around 1 1/16 miles and the Preakness clocks in at 1 3/16, which isn’t as long as the above Derbies, so Oxbow only needs to hold on to his speed for a little bit past his optimal distance. If the conditions are fast at Pimlico, watch out for this horse, which is trained by five-time Preakness winner D. Wayne Lukas, although the last of his wins came in 1999.

Titletown Five is the second of the Lukas stable to make its way to Baltimore, and he will have the longest horse betting odds in the field after finishing fourth in the Grade-3 Derby Trial following a ninth in the Louisiana Derby. This is a horse that needed four attempts to break his maiden and hasn’t even run a race longer than 1 1/8 miles, which came in Louisiana and we see how that turned out. This would be a massive upset.

Will Take Charge rounds out the Lukas stable, and he has alternated wins and poor finishes over his last four starts, so that could put off a few players. An eighth-place finish at the Kentucky Derby isn’t optimal, but Will Take Charge certainly has enough talent to at least post a top-three finish, so keep him in your mind.

How It Will Play Out

Orb was very impressive at the Kentucky Derby as he was the class of the field, and he’ll surge to another online betting victory in the Preakness.
