Super Ninety Nine Flexes At Oaklawn Park

Posted by Marco Sussman on 3/17/2013 7:00:54 PM

The stakes for sports betting players are being increased with each thoroughbred horse race leading up to the Kentucky Derby in May, and this week’s big event is the Grade-2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas. One of the horses being labeled as a favorite for Churchill Downs will find his way to the winner’s circle on Saturday when this 1 1/16-mile race is completed.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, March 16th, post time TBA
Where:  Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, AR

Carve is making his graded-stakes debut after winning his maiden at Oaklawn Park, as well as an allowance race. This will be a big step up in competition for this three-year-old colt, but a solid performance would keep him on track to Churchill Downs in May.

Delhomme finished a respectable third in his graded-stakes debut, the Grade-2 Remsen at Aqueduct, but that was way back in November and there hasn’t been a lot of stability for this horse. He has had three different jockeys racing on three different tracks and that could hurt Delhomme’s horse betting chances on Saturday.

On the other hand, Den’s Legacy has been busy as this will be his 11th start (his third of 2013) and the last three have come in graded-stakes races. Den’s Legacy has a pair of second-place runs, in the Grade-3 Sham Stakes and then the Grade-2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes, so he can run with the best of them, but can he continue his strong form?

Hardrock Eleven is coming off a terrible 12th-place finish in the Grade-2 Risen Star Stakes in February, and another performance like that could knock him off the trail to the Kentucky Derby. Hardrock Eleven’s results have been all over the place with two second-place finishes, but the other three starts haven’t resulted in higher than a fifth. Which horse will show up on Saturday?

Oxbow finished fourth in the Risen Star and he has alternated between wins and fourth-place finishes over his last four starts. Like Hardrock Eleven, you don’t know which version of Oxbow will show up and that doesn’t bode well for his horse betting odds, but you just never know.

Stormy Holiday has two fourth-place finishes in his only two starts and probably won’t be a favorite on Saturday, but both of his starts have come at Oaklawn Park, so familiar surroundings could inspire this three-year-old colt, a horse that needs a good effort this weekend.

Super Ninety Nine may be the best horse in the field and many are expecting a solid run from this three-year-old, which is coming off two straight wins, including in the Grade-3 Southwest Stakes in February. Super Ninety Nine is being brought along slowly, but many think he’ll be a horse betting favorite at the Kentucky Derby, providing he gets there safe and soung.

Texas Bling finished a disappointing ninth at the Southwest Stakes and this is another chance for this three-year-old colt to redeem himself as the talent is there; he finished second in the non-graded Smarty Jones Stakes in January. Texas Bling has to hold up his speed throughout the race, however, as he has been known to tail off as the distance gets longer.

Title Contender will try to live up to his name, although an 11th-place finish in the Grade-1 CashCall Futurity that followed an eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile didn’t help his stock. Title Contender desperately needs a good run on Saturday to stay in the hunt for Churchill Downs, and he may very well need a win.

Treasury Bill finished second in the Grade-2 San Vicente and that was enough to persuade his handlers to give him another chance after winning his maiden. Like a few other horses in this field, Treasury Bill has never run a race this long, so it’ll be interesting to see how he holds up over 1 1/16 miles.

Will Take Charge rounds out the field at Oaklawn Park, where he finished sixth in the Southwest Stakes, but he did win the Smarty Jones in January, which was also at Oaklawn Park. This is another horse with a lot of potential, but he is wildly inconsistent and that’s never a good thing.

How It Will Play Out

Bob Baffert has trained the last three winners of this race and he has two chances to make it four in a row. Den’s Legacy may not pan out, but Super Ninety Nine should be high on your online betting list.
