Super Saturday Heroes

In a little more than a New York Minute last weekend, Eastern-based runners punched their ticket to California and the Breeders’ Cup and horse bettors saw them all take different avenues.

In New York the quality was there for all to see. Belle Gallantry won the Beldame at 9-2 with a 103 Beyer. She had a legit excuse in her prior race when she caught the mud in the Personal Ensign. The daughter of After Market took it too her foes from the get go through a :24.18, quarter, a :47.51 half and a 1:11.20 three-quarters split. She extended her margin of victory to over 8 lengths and got the final time of 9 furlongs in 1:47.55.

This is a classy horse but she will be facing much more speed next time.

The 37th running of the Flower Bowl went to the classy Stephanie’s Kitten with a 98 Beyer. She was in striking distance early, was a head off the lead at the top of the lane, and then rolled late to win by a length and a quarter to get the mile and a quarter on turf in a respectable 2:01.15.

Speed was also on display in the Grade 1 Vosburgh and Private Zone made them pay when earning a winning 106 Beyer. The Philly interloper sat a half-length off the lead early, made the top after a half-mile in :44.81 and held sway by a neck getting the 6 furlongs in 1:08.95. The gelded son of Mucho Uno was defending his title and he used this same race last year before the BC Sprint. In that race, he was wide early and just spit out the bit.

Turf marathoners did their thing in the Joe Hirsch when Main Sequence got the 12 furlongs on grass in 2:26.32 with a 104 figure. He was winning his third in a row and is now undefeated in the states. He has shown the ability to overcome poor trips and still prevail.

And Tonalist proved his Belmont Stakes was no fluke when he won the Jockey Club Gold Cup at a mile and a quarter in 2:02.12 with recording a 106 Beyer.

Last year Ron the Greek got a garden trip in the Jockey Club Gold Cup while earning a 114 Beyer and getting the distance in 1:59.70.

He took of the blinkers for this race and it worked to perfection. He settled early, was far off the lead, advanced to fourth at the top of the lane, was forced to steady, but was widening late to get the distance with ease. Tonalist is now 3 for 3 at Belmont and his versatility could be his best asset.

The son of Tapit has repeatedly proven he can be placed anywhere and still succeed and having options is one huge asset in this game.

Look for Tonalist to return and race in the BC Classic and runner-up Zivo will also likely make the trip to Santa Anita for the biggest race in America.

The Classic is shaping up as a wide-open affair with a ton of possibilities.
