Robert B Lewis Stakes Betting Predictions – He’s Had Enough Rolls To Victory At Santa Anita Park

Posted by Marco Sussman on 2/3/2013 5:47:19 PM

Sports betting players waiting for the Kentucky Derby in May should be starting their research already for the first leg of the Triple Crown, and the Grade-2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park is a $200,000 stop on the prep trail that warms the three-year-old horses up for a Derby at the same track. Last year’s winner of the Robert B. Lewis went on to win the Kentucky Derby, and the trainer/jockey combination that came together here in 2012 are back again in 2013.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, February 2nd, post time TBA
Where: Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA
Pick: He’s Had Enough

Den’s Legacy is one of the two horses in the field for trainer Bob Baffert, who has won this race three times (1999 with General Challenge, 2003 with Domestic Dispute and 2009 with Pioneer of the Nile). This three-year-old colt comes from Florida, and he last raced on January 5th, coming in second to Goldencents in the Grade-3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. It’ll also be the fifth start at Santa Anita for Den’s Legacy, who has two wins, three seconds and a third in nine starts, and he was impressive in a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in November, but that was on turf. The Robert B. Lewis Stakes is run on dirt, on which Den’s Legacy has run twice (both at this racetrack). A factor that could make horse betting players take a look at this horse: he has run his last five races with Garrett Gomez, who helped Baffert steer Pioneer of the Nile to the win here in ’09.

This will be a huge race for Flashback, who won his maiden at Hollywood Park in December, but that is his lone start so far and it was over seven furlongs on turf, But it’s another Baffert entry, so that deserves a look at least. This Kentucky-bred three-year-old will likely end up entering the Santa Anita Derby in April with a strong performance on Saturday, and he’ll be ridden by Julian Leparoux, who was also with Flashback in his debut victory, so that familiarity is there. It’ll be a huge jump up in competition for Flashback, but it’s early in the race to the Kentucky Derby and a good start in the prep races can go a long way.

He’s Had Enough is another horse that is being pushed towards the “Run for the Roses” at Churchill Downs in May, but he was up and down as a two-year-old, following a win in his debut with a sixth-place run in the non-graded Oak Tree Juvenile Turf in September and then he bombed to an 11th-place finish in the Grade-1 Breeders’ Futurity the next month. This Kentucky-bred colt then came in second at the Grade-1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but fell back to fifth in the Grade-1 CashCall Futurity and you just never know what you’re going to get with He’s Had Enough, who will be ridden by Mario Gutierrez for the fourth straight race. Gutierrez won this race with I’ll Have Another last year and he was joined by trainer Doug O’ Neill, who is looking to build off the momentum of last year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victories, so He’s Had Enough has a lot to live up to.

Little Jerry is looking to bounce back from an eighth-place run in the CashCall after winning his maiden in November, where trainer Richard Baltas paired him with Tyler Baze before going to Aaron Gryder at Hollywood Park in December. This Kentucky-bred three-year-old doesn’t have anything scheduled after this race as his handlers likely want to see how he does at Santa Anita Park on dirt after running his first two races on turf, so Little Jerry (and Baze as well) will need to impress Baltas in order to enter the Santa Anita Derby, a $750,000 event and one of the most important races on the Kentucky Derby prep trail.

How It Will Play Out

Even though there are only four horses entered in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, it is still a crucial stop on the road to Churchill Downs and all four horses have a reasonable shot at getting to the finish line first. But O’Neill has been on a roll lately and with Gutierrez in the saddle again, the two will win this race with your online betting pick for Saturday, He’s Had Enough.
