Santa Anita Handicap Betting – Shared Belief Picks Up Another Major Win

Posted by on 3/5/2015 8:08:28 PM

The Grade-1 Santa Anita Handicap is for horses four years old and up, and with a purse of a cool million dollars, this might be the most important race for older horses at this point of the season. It is run at 1 1/4 miles on dirt at Santa Anita Park, where it has been run since 1935.

This is a large field and one with plenty of intriguing options, but Shared Belief stands head and shoulders above the rest.

What : Horse Betting

When : Saturday, March 7th, post time TBA

Where : Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA

Pick : Shared Belief

Bronzo hails from Chile and has made four starts, all graded-stakes events. He has finished fourth in three of those events, including the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and most recently in the Grade-2 San Pasqual. This six-year-old will need a few breaks to get into the money in this loaded field.

Catch A Flight comes from Argentina and has made one start in his career, finishing third in an allowance race at Santa Anita in January and that was only over a mile. How will this thoroughbred handle the last quarter-mile? We'll see on Saturday.

Cool Samurai has made six starts, but just one in a graded-stakes event and that was a sixth in the Grade-2 Robert B. Lewis last February. He has never finished lower than third in his other starts with two wins, but those were in a maiden (his second attempt) and an allowance race and none of those five starts were over a mile.

Crimson Giant has started an incredible 60 races, but just two have been in graded-stakes races: a 12th in the Grade-3 Eddie D. in September 2012 and a seventh at the Grade-2 Potrero Grande in April of last year. The rest have been starter/allowance/maiden races, so this field might be too much for this six-year-old.

Diamond Bachelor has never finished higher than fourth in three graded-stakes races, although his fourth at the Grade-2 San Marcos Stakes last month is promising. This four-year-old could sneak into the money if a few things go his way, but he'll need to take it up another notch.

Dynamic Sky came in one spot behind Diamond Bachelor at the San Marcos and he has plenty of graded-stakes experience as this will be his 13th such start. He won the Grade-3 Red Smith Handicap in November and this Canadian five-year-old could be a darkhorse to finish in the top three.

Hard Aces has 18 starts under his saddle, but just one in a graded-stakes race and that was a sixth at the Grade-3 Fair Grounds Handicap in February 2014. He needed four tries to break his maiden and has never run more than 1 1/8 miles, so don't expect much from this five-year-old.

Imperative finished seventh in this race last year (Game On Dude won for the third time in four years) and has made 11 graded-stakes starts, winning the Grade-2 Charles Town Classic last April and he has four top-three finishes in those races. He is definitely one to watch, but this five-year-old gelding has finished fourth or worse in each of his last four starts.

Moreno has 14 starts in graded-stakes races, winning twice at the Grade-2 Dwyer in July 2013 and the Grade-1 Whitney Handicap last August. However, things haven't gone smoothly for him lately with a ninth at the Grade-1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and a 14th at the Breeders' Cup Classic, and this will be his 2015 debut, so there will be a lot of pressure on this five-year-old gelding.

Patrioticandproud came in seventh at the San Marcos, but he had a nice run going with results of second or third in three straight graded-stakes events prior to that race. This six-year-old has a lot of experience in big races and could offer some solid value for horse betting sharps.

Shared Belief is the obvious favorite after winning the San Antonio Handicap, his ninth win in 10 starts and seven of those have been graded-stakes events. The only race he hasn't won was the Breeders' Cup Classic in which he finished fourth, and this four-year-old is going to make a push for Horse of the Year in 2015. The field will have to be on top of their game to beat Shared Belief.

Sr. Quisqueyano won the non-graded Sunshine Millions Classic in January, but he is winless in six graded-stakes races in his career and a field of this caliber should be out of reach for this five-year-old. He has also never run 1 1/4 miles, so that could be a problem.

How It Will Play Out

While this is a very good and deep field, it'll be something else if another horse beats Shared Belief to the finish line on Saturday.
