Sham Stakes Betting Tips – Goldencents Starts 2013 Off On A High Note

Posted by Marco Sussman on 1/2/2013 6:01:58 PM

For sports betting players that follow thoroughbred horse racing, the 2013 season has started and at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, three-year-old horses will battle it out in the Grade-3 Sham Stakes, which is run over a mile. All players (as well as thoroughbred horse owners, trainers and jockeys) should have an eye on the Kentucky Derby, which will take place in May, and the winner of this race is already well-known to sharps; he’ll show why with a dominant performance in California.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, January 5th, post time TBA
Where: Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA
Pick: Goldencents

Den’s Legacy seemed to be gathering steam as his two-year-old campaign went on, wrapping up with a third-place run in the Grade-1 CashCall Futurity, although he has yet to win outside of a non-stakes race (the Generous event in November and his maiden on his third attempt back in August). Den’s Legacy could be in for a huge third-year campaign if he continues to improve, and trainer Bob Baffert (who has won this race twice in 2001 and 2006) may have an ace in his back pocket as jockey Garrett Gomez has won this event four times in the last six year. Gomez hasn’t finished lower than third in four straight starts with Den’s Legacy.

Dirty Swagg is coming off a disappointing seventh-place result in the CashCall Futurity, but some may have expected it as Dirty Swagg hasn’t finished higher than seventh in a graded-stakes race. In fact, the only time that Dirty Swagg has finished higher than third came when he won his maiden in his third attempt back in September, and he would probably be a horse betting darkhorse when he lines up on Saturday in California.

Dry Summer will probably join him as a longshot after finishing 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf race in November, and that followed an eighth-place result in the Grade-1 Frontrunner back in September, so he may be a horse that is out of his element when he goes up against the upper echelon. If there is anything to hold on to for horse betting players, it is that Dry Summer has been paired with Joe Talamo for four of his five starts, but even that may not be enough to guide this horse to a decent finish.

Goldencents wasn’t that busy in 2012, but did he ever show up when asked as he finished first in two of three starts, including a second-place result in the Grade-1 Champagne Stakes in October and followed it up with a victory in the Grade-3 Delta Downs Jackpot the next month. Trainer Doug O’Neill has high hopes for Goldencents on the road to the Kentucky Derby, where he won last year with I’ll Have Another, and a win in this Grade-3 race would put him on the right path. Kevin Krigger will make his fourth start in a row with Goldencents.

Greeley Awesome finally broke his maiden in his seventh race at Hollywood Park in November, and horse betting players should probably stay well and clear of this horse. He has yet to start a race outside of maiden-special weight or maiden-claiming events, so a Grade-3 race as his first start of 2012 may be asking a lot of this three-year-old colt. Greeley Awesome may simply be not a good thoroughbred, especially against horses going on to bigger and better things, and O’Neill, who also trains this horse, may be better off to put all his eggs in the Goldencents basket.

Manando broke his maiden in his fourth attempt after finishing third in each of his first three starts, so it isn’t like he has been struggling, he has just had problems getting over the hump. Manando is another Baffert-trained and Martin Garcia has been in the saddle for the last three races, and he could have a shot at challenging Goldencents. It is also promising that he won his maiden in a race of 1 1/16 miles after failing in everything under a mile, which is the distance of this race. This will be a very good gauge of where Manando is at right now.

How It Will Play Out

It’ll be a major surprise if someone comes out of nowhere and takes this race from Goldencents, a horse that some think should have a good chance at the Kentucky Derby in May. Make Goldencents your online betting pick on Saturday.
