We Are All Witnesses

If there were any doubts before the Big ‘Cap last Saturday at Santa Anita, they were all put to rest as Shared Belief made believers out of the witnesses to his tour de force in the race.

Before over 26,000 fans, Shared Belief did what he was expected to do blowing away the field in the mile and a quarter main event.

The race unfolded like it looked on paper as Moreno set a :23, :45.56, 1:10.89 pace.

Mike Smith was statue like aboard Shared Belief as he sat sixth early staying wide and out of trouble. He kicked clear in the stretch and was not asked for his best. He had plenty left in the tank and won geared down.

Smith : “The perfect trip with him is just being in the clear no matter what. Today, I felt we just needed a clear, smooth trip. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and I agreed that it was important to get away well. I was watching the TV from the quarter pole to the wire, and I feel bad to say this, but it was trying not to win by so far. As they say, don’t squeeze a lemon if you don’t have to.”

Smith was winning this race for the third year in a row. Game On Dude was the winning vehicle in the other wins.

It just appears that Shared Belief is continuing to improve. He has only lost once in this career and that came in the nightmarish trip in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last year.

He earned a 111 Beyer Speed Figure in the Big ‘Cap, his second best figure in his career. Game On Dude earned a 117 Beyer winning this race in 2013 he earned that same Beyer last year.

Ron the Greek posted a 105 Beyer in 2012.

For Hollendorfer, he is finally getting the respect he has deserved for so long. Far from a national name, Hollendorfer was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011 but his talent is not really known from coast-to-coast.

In the last 1980s, he won the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park but he seldom ships out of California. When he does, he means business.

He has won the Coaching Club American Oaks in New York, the Lane’s End Stakes in Kentucky, and the Met Mile at Belmont Park.

One of his best traits as a trainer is that he never puts a short horse on the track. All of his runners are dead fit. And he doesn’t train with speed, as he will rely on a good foundation and ordinary works to get horses primed to run their best.

Handicappers can look to some of his best ploys when seeking winners. In the last 5 years, he has won with 26% of his first-time starters. When he brings a horse back in a week, he is potent. He has won with 2 of 7 of those starters the last 5 years and only one ran out of the money.

And when he sends out a horse that is a favorite, he seldom disappoints. He has hit with 39% of favorites the last 5 years, well about the national average.

We can believe in Shared Belief and Hollendorfer.
