Shore Things

The 1985 movie comedy The Sure Thing was well before the time of the reality phenomenon known as the show the Jersey Shore, but for gamblers and vacationers alike, Monmouth Park offers some great betting opportunities that scour the replays and look for troubled runners at the Oceanport emporium.

This is the racetrack where I cut my teeth. This is the track that gave me the foundation to be lucky enough to work in this sport for nearly 40 years now. But it was not my first taste of racing, but that first taste was associated with Monmouth Park.

I was probably about 10 or 11 and my brothers took me to the Amory Haskell property a few miles from our home. Little did I know but they had a hunt meet there with hurdle races and steeplechase races over the Haskell land.

You can imagine the awe a young kid had to be under when he got to this event and saw limousines with chandeliers in them, beautiful women walking around well dressed with big hats and maybe most importantly, bookies walking around taking action on the races.

I was basically hooked right then and there.

Today, Monmouth’s marquee race is the Haskell Invitational, named after the aforementioned owner of the hunt meet property and a race that may be a stage for some of the top runners in America this year.

There were several runners last week at Monmouth that deserve watching. Shore Points South had the misfortune of hooking a 1-2 shot in the debut but the runner gave a very good account of herself.

She showed good speed on a legit pace, pushed the winner the early, and held on for 2nd at a clever 17-1. This runner is out of an unraced am that is kin to an over $300,000 earner and there are nothing but winners in the family. Watch for this miss.

Savings Account will not lose next time. Trained by the very clever Tom Proctor, this filly won off a year layoff in her 2015 opener, was wide in her prior race and was over 19 lengths clear of the show horse in her Monmouth debut. Sure, she will be little value by herself, but she is a must use on any kind of exotic bet next time no matter where she shows up.

Never Say No Girl will be a price next time. She had one prior race sprinting in Florida and really didn’t want to go long in her shore debut. She set the pace going long and just stopped badly. If this miss shows up in a cut back situation in a $40,000 sprint maiden claimer on grass, get down.

Last but not least, take a look at Nauset Beach. He was overmatched most of last year, but the light went on in the Gulfstream finale and he repeated in his May debut. Last week, the Terri Pompay student lost all chance when forced to check entering the first turn, raced 5 wide and had nothing left.

A turf sprint would be ideal for his next test.

These are just a few samples of what can be gleaned from looking at the replays and doing the due diligence. It’s the difference being winning and losing.
