Sittin’ Pretty with Temple City

  • Who: Thoroughbreds – Temple City, Treat Gently, Unusual Suspect, Marlang
  • What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Hollywood Turf Cup
  • Where: Hollywood Park
  • When: Saturday, November 13th

In the 28th Running of The Hollywood Turf Cup this Saturday, I like a horse that finished last, beaten by 90 ¼ lengths (c’mon guys, why not just round to the nearest length?) in his most recent start, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of -0. Check out the analysis below to find out why.

#1-Worth Repeating: 4YO colt is in the masterful hands of Dick Mandella and Rafael Bejarano, but his speed figs seem to have peaked in the low 90’s. That won’t get it done here. The mile-and-a-half is also a question mark.

#2-Treat Gently: She tried males last out and weakened to finish 4th at odds of 11-1. Perhaps she didn’t care for the yielding turf. Her best win stateside was the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay, but she didn’t beat much in there. Thus far she appears better suited to take on members of her own sex.

#3-Unusual Suspect: This guy’s got just one win in his last 22 starts. Note he has finished behind several in the Turf Cup lineup in 2010. He’s also 0-for-4 at the distance. He’s probably worth considering underneath in the exotics.

#4-Buenas Dias: He does his best running at this distance, but like Worth Repeating, his speed fig ceiling has been in the low 90’s. Maybe he can suck up for 3rd or 4th in the tri’s and super’s.

#5-Where’s the Remote: Mitchell trainee rallied powerfully in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch to nab second by a neck over the tough Bourbon Bay. The winner, Champ Pegasus, went on to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Still, there’s a big difference between 1 ¼ and 1 ½ miles…that big kick may not be there at the longer distance. Mixed feelings.

#6-Marlang: He looks like the pacesetter, but the lead won’t come easily with Temple City pressing from his immediate outside. The fractions were pedestrian in the Clement Hirsch and he still faded to finish off the board. The Canadian-bred earned a big chunk in the Breeders’ Stakes (3rd leg of the Canadian Triple Crown) and since then has been most effective vs. Grade 3 types. Looking elsewhere.

#7-Temple City: Speaking of elsewhere, Temple City is where I landed. He’s fast, but doesn’t need the lead…note he made a strong run from off the pace to grab 3rd in last year’s Del Mar Handicap, losing by less than a length. He owns a win and a second in three starts over this course, and he’s also won at the distance, albeit on Del Mar’s main track. He’s the only member of the field to crack the 100-mark on the Beyer scale (over this course no less). Jockey Joe Talamo seems to fit him best. Trainer Carla Gaines said he lost weight on the trip to Hawthorne (that race was his first on dirt), but he has recovered and is doing great now. His recent works attest to that. I’m betting on Temple City to win.

#8-Big Shot Syd: He just won an entry-level allowance event on Hollywood Park’s main track…faces a daunting class test here.

These are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
