Smarty Jones Stakes Betting Tips – Brown Almighty Charges To The Win At Oaklawn Park

Posted by Marco Sussman on 1/21/2013 6:03:34 PM

Sports betting players should be familiar with the Smarty Jones Stakes, named after the horse that won the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes champion who was retired after missing the Triple Crown by one place in the Belmont Stakes. The winner on Monday in Hot Springs will be the descendant of another great thoroughbred champion.

What: Horse Betting
When: Monday, January 21st, post time TBA
Where: Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, AR
Pick: Brown Almighty

After winning his maiden in September at Saratoga, Always In A Tiz (probable) came in second in the non-graded Traskwood at Aqueduct to close out the 2012 campaign and a solid result in this race would give him a chance to run another important event further down the Derby trail. Trainer Dominick Schettino has gone with two different jockeys for this Kentucky-bred colt, so it’ll be interesting to see if he goes back to the well with either Ramon Dominguez or Rajiv Maragh, or tries another jockey.

Avare (probable) made four starts as a two-year-old, winning his maiden in his second attempt, and he is coming off a win in the non-graded Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita, the site of his two victories. But he also has a fourth-place finish in a maiden attempt and came in seventh in the non-graded Real Quiet Stakes and horse betting players may be put off by a horse that displays inconsistency. Doug O’Neill has had three different jockeys in four races with Avare.

Brown Almighty (probable) has to get back on track after a ninth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in November, but this will also be his first start on dirt, so this will be a huge test for this three-year-old colt. He has a great pedigree as Brown Almighty is a descendant of Big Brown, the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, and he racked up two wins and two runner-up results in his first four starts prior to the Cup.

King Henny (probable) followed up a disappointing fifth-place run in the non-graded Remington Springboard Mile with a victory in the non-graded Big Drama in January, and it’s just a matter of which horse shows up on Monday in Arkansas. The colt has gotten his three-year-old campaign off to a good start, and now he just has to ride that momentum into the next race.

Midas Dancer (possible) started with a third-place finish in the non-graded Kentucky Juvenile at Kentucky Downs and has yet to finish higher than second in three allowance races. He likely won’t have great horse betting odds for this race, but Midas Dancer has been consistent, at least and this Kentucky-bred option might surprise some people.

Officer Alex recovered nicely from an eighth-place finish in an allowance race by winning the non-graded Pennsylvania Nursery and another solid run would definitely put him on the road to Churchill Downs in May. Trainer Lynn Whiting still has to figure out who will ride Officer Alex in the Smarty Jones Stakes, but whoever she chooses will have a well-balanced horse to control. Whiting also won the Smarty Jones Stakes with Dryfly and Calvin Borel in 2010; Borel, of course, went on to win his third Kentucky Derby in May.

Texas Bling (probable) is another horse that showed great recovery skills as he finished sixth in the non-graded El Joven in November, then won another non-graded event in the Remington Springboard Mile in December on dirt, so this three-year-old colt will be ready to go on Monday. His first race was on turf, but Texas Bling may be better suited for a dirt surface; horse betting sharps will see at Oaklawn Park.

Tour Guide (possible) has three wins in five starts, including in the non-graded Sugar Bowl in December, but he did also finish fifth in the non-graded Dover. He was a busy horse over the last half of 2012, so you have to wonder if fatigue will be a factor for this three-year-old colt, although some horses may like the extra work.

Will Take Charge (probable) should wrap up this field at Oaklawn Park and he had a bounce-back race of his own after a terrible 13th in the Grade-2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs. This Kentucky-bred colt came in second to Texas Bling at the Remington Springboard Mile and if that horse shows up on Monday, Will Take Charge could be a popular horse betting pick.

How It Will Play Out

Brown Almighty takes a page out of his father’s book and gallops to a win in the Smarty Jones Stakes, while making some online betting players very happy.
