Social Graces

To be accepted in certain circles of society, players must know the rules or break them and Social Inclusion is all about the latter as he proved last week when he dusted off the highly-regard Honor Code like he was a stepchild.

Totally disrespected in this debut at 9-1, the son of Pioneerof the Nile broke from the rail at Gulfstream, took control from the get go, got the half mile in :44 and small change before drawing off the win by 7 and a half lengths with a clever 93 Beyer Speed Figure.

That was just the appetizer.

The speedball lined up against Honor Code and was well backed as the second choice but it was over before you could see ‘please pass the Dijon’.

His final time of 1:40 4/5 set the track record that was set a month earlier by Devil’s Cave. But maybe even more impressive was his winning margin of 10 lengths. Honor Code got the place and was over 17 lengths in front of the third finisher, who also was 17 ahead of the next rival.

When horses are stretched out like that, it often indicates a very powerful race and only time will tell what kind of future this brilliant meteor has ahead of him.

Social Inclusion is owned by Rontos Racing Stables and the president is Ronald Sanchez. The owner has been patient with this runner, Sanchez: “He was training extremely well but we wanted to give him time because he’s a May foal. Our original goal was the Preakness, but now we are thinking about the Derby. The main goal is the Wood Memorial, but we may want to not travel and stay here for the Florida Derby. He’s full of energy and he’s very proud. He’s nice and calm. He came back very happy and didn’t fell tired at all. He’s special, he can handle whatever comes to him.”

One of the things I was taught about this business from owners in Southern California is that you have to sell on the come.

Sanchez: “I’ve had maybe 8 or 10 offers. I know this is a business, but we’ve going to make a decision that is best for the horse. If I sell, it has to be for big money. I want to keep a piece of the horse, because this is the horse of a lifetime.”

As far as the pedigree is concerned, Social Inclusion has a right to perform as the distances widen. His sire won Grade 1 races routing and was second in Mine That Bird’s Kentucky Derby in 2009.

His Grade 2 placed dam was sprint only but his lone sibling to race Saint Midas won routing.

The sky is the limit for this youngster if he can stay intact.

As far as Honor Code, he will live to race another day. His trained conditioner last year’s Kentucky Derby winner so he knows about the pressure, Shug McGaughey: “He seemed to come back fine. He ate up good last night and walked good. Everything looks fine. That’s what you hope to see. I just think we caught a very good horse on a race track that he loved.”
