Sprinters Front and Center on Saturday

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 1/3/2012 5:37:38 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – Apriority, Capt. Candyman Can, Indiano, Immortal Eyes, Turbulent Descent, Great Hot
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Mr. Prospector, The La Brea
Where: Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita
When: Saturday, December 31st

The Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park this Saturday looks like a mad scramble, with the highest morning line odds in the 7-horse field listed at 10-1. Apriority may be the value play if he remains in the vicinity of his 4-1 morning line price. I liked Turbulent Descent in The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, but her chances were compromised by the track, which was listed as ‘good’, and a troubled trip, in which she was roughed up at the start, then moved prematurely. She’ll take a world of beating in The La Brea.

Here’s a quick look at each of the Mr. Prospector  participants:
#1-Apriority: Dizney homebred went on quite a run from late 2010 through early May of 2011, posting a record of 7-4-3-0, with Beyer Speed Figures ranging from 96-113. He’s 2-for-2 at Gulfstream Park, and has trained beautifully since his 6th-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He’ll be tough if able to work out a trip from the rail. I’ll bet on Apriority to win at odds of 5-2 or better.

#2-Zero Rate Policy: He’s sharp now, and likes the local strip, but the 3YO will have to improve on his lifetime-best Beyer of 96 to win this.

#3-Capt. Candyman Can: Field’s leading earner ($760,147) returns from a 7-month break, but note he won off a 15-month hiatus last February, albeit a minor stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Taking a stand against the morning line chalk.

#4-Indiano: I’m curious as to why this Kentucky-bred 3YO started his career in Panama, where he went a perfect 5-for-5. He’s a Grade 2 winner stateside, but this will be his first try against his elders. Minor award seems likely.
#5-Immortal Eyes: 6Yo gelding has put together a very nice 2011 campaign in the Mid-Atlantic region, finishing first or second in eight straight. He failed to hit the board in his only start locally, and switches to the Toner barn. Puzzler.
#6-The Hunk: Winner of four-in-a-row makes his stakes debut. Will take them as far as he can on the front end.
#7-Nathan’s H Q: This guy always tries hard, but has finished behind a few in here. Could provide value underneath in the exotics.

In The La Brea, the trick is to hook something up with Turbulent Descent. I’m going to bet a straight 2-7 exacta…#2-Turbulent Descent over #7-Great Hot. Great Hot cleared her entry-level allowance condition sprinting at Santa Anita, and turned in a solid effort here when third behind Zazu and Ultra Blend in the Grade 1 Lady’s Secret. She’ll be flying late.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
