Red Unleashes a Dandy

Posted by on 8/4/2015 12:58:44 AM

It’s been a long hard road but Texas Red, under rider Kent Desormeaux, proved he is back in a big way by getting the best of Frosted in the classy Jim Dandy Stakes last weekend at Saratoga.

The beaten chalk twice this year, Afleet Alex’s son Texas Red improved once he was sent long. He put in an electrifying run to take the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year and that was a race that American Pharoah would have been favored if he did not have a set back.

Last weekend Texas Red was out to make amends after tiring as chalk but that was a solid move forward when he ran second in the Dwyer. He was in tough in the SanVicente on the cut back in his 2015 opener and if but you figures he just needed the Dwyer race, you could have built a case for a move forward.

In the Jim Dandy Japan set the pace with splits of :24.37, :48.15 and 1:11.92 but Texas Red got an ideal 2-hole trip, took over at the top of the lane and despite losing ground late, he held on by a half length over Frosted in 1:48.77.

Red’s rider was giddy about the win, Desormeaux: “ I had so much left that I got to the front quicker than I thought I would but when challenged, he had tons left. The most encouraging thing about the entire ride was the energy galloping out. I think he can only improve. His true superior athletic ability to get a mile and a half and a mile and a quarter is what he is best at.”

The race lost a little luster when Competitive Edge and Upstart scratched.

Frosted ran huge in defeat.

Once sent long, the light went on for this runner. After a poor race in the Fountain of Youth trainer Kiaran McLaughlin switched things up. He adjusted the blinkers, and the runner had a throat procedure to improve his breathing.

His trainer basically admitted his runner showed up, just was second best.

Superstars like Affirmed, Conquistador Cielo, Bernardini, and Street Sense have won the Dandy.

Red earned a career best 105 Beyer Speed Figure and that holds up well against recent Jim Dandy winners.

In 2014 Wicked Strong won the Dandy with a 100 Beyer and then was beaten a nose next out. Palace Malice posted a 107 Beyer in the 2013 running before running 4th in the Travers.

And in 2012 Alpha earned a 96 Beyer in the Dandy but then got up by a neck in the $1 million Travers.

The Jim Dandy should set up Texas Red perfectly for the Travers at Saratoga on August 29. Frosted will likely be back for more and the other top sophomores in the East will be ready and willing.

Because it was small field, Texas Red may not get the credit he deserves but he proved he could be placed anywhere and still perform.

Those that want to turn Red into green should not be shy about going to the windows.
