The Next Wise Dan?

The Woodbine Mile last Sunday had no Wise Dan but Trade Storm was not fazed as he stormed home to upset in the Grade 1 race.

Wise Dan had won the last 2 Woodbine Miles but is taking different route this year. Handicappers have to figure he would have been hard pressed to handle Trade Storm last weekend.

Trained by David Simcock, who won the other Grade 1 grass race at Woodbine Sunday, Trade Storm gave most of his rivals a head start last weekend.

He broke poorly, was off dead last, and was 9th after three quarters of a mile. Bobby’s Kitten set the pace and he had a length and a half lead at the top of the lane but Trade Storm swallowed him up as Kaigun got up for second.

The splits were legit as Bobby’s Kitten went :23.97, :47.52, 1:12.27 to set up the winning time of 1:36.87.

Trade Storm proved he belongs in this league when he chased Wise Dan home in this race last year. The place horse in last year’s Mile won the Grade 3 Knickerbocker next out and won a $98,000 stakes at Belmont since. Trade Storm was beaten at Haydock a couple of races back but that course is tricky. Trade Storm has faced some nice horses this year and he also got beat by a quality horse in the Dubai finale as the winner that day won next start in Tokyo in a Group 1 $1.8 million miler over 16 rivals.

Trade Storm picked up a nice $540,900 paycheck, earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure and raised his career bankroll to over $1.4 million.

The son of Trade Fair had to deal with a ‘good’ racecourse and he may not have adored the footing. Trade Storm’s rider, Jamie Spencer, was concerned about the going, Spencer: “Obviously, the ground was a little softer than ideal for him but we didn’t have Wise Dan to deal with, so it looked like a good spot for him and it was a happy ending. He settled well off a strong pace and I felt confident in the horse that he was always going to pick up.”

The purse money was not the only reward for Trade Storm as the Woodbine Mile is a ‘win and you’re in’ race so he punched his ticket to Breeders’ Cup Mile.

For what’s next for Trade Storm, his trainer had some ideas, Simcock: “He’ll probably take up the ‘win and you’re in’ and go down to Santa Anita and enjoy himself and see how we get on. He’ll get his fast ground, which suits a fairly strong pace. It will probably be a tougher race, but he is in excellent order and he never disgraces himself.”

The runner-up Kaigun can’t be counted out in the future. He didn’t seem to handle the going, never seemed comfortable but still held together pretty well.

Both of these runners will be valid factors in California.
