Triple Crown Betting Tips – A Look At This Year’s Triple Crown Hopefuls

Posted by Marco Sussman on 1/10/2013 6:03:00 PM

Good sports betting players have probably already started to think about the Kentucky Derby, which kicks off the beginning of the Triple Crown season in thoroughbred horse racing and truth be told, they probably started to look at 2013 as soon as the curtain dropped on the 2012 Triple Crown season. Here is a preview of the three races, starting in Louisville for the Derby, then moving to Baltimore for the Preakness Stakes and finally, concluding in Elmont, New York for the Belmont Stakes. Let the march for the Triple Crown begin!

Kentucky Derby

Even though there are three races in the Triple Crown, horse betting players may give more attention to the Derby as it kicks off everything for the rest of the season, although you should really keep a close eye on the races leading up to Churchill Downs to get a better idea of who to wager on. The distance of 1 ¼ miles is right in the middle when it comes to the Triple Crown races, so you need a horse that is going to be well-balanced and solid throughout all three facets of the race. This race has been won by longshots in the past couple years as Animal Kingdom and I’ll Have Another have shocked the horse betting world, but this year, things may balance out a little more and the favorites will return to the winner’s circle. Look for Shanghai Bobby or Uncaptured to steal the show and walk away with the bouquet of roses that is draped around the neck of the winning horse.

Preakness Stakes

The Preakness at Pimlico is known as the sprint of the Triple Crown at 1 3/16 miles, and I’ll Have Another became the first horse since Big Brown in 2008 to win the first two legs when he stormed to the win last year. This has happened nine times since 1995, so you might want to be careful about picking the winner of the Kentucky Derby to go on to the win in Baltimore. This is a race for the horses that like to get out to a quick start because there may not be enough time to come back for a victory if you get out of the gate slowly, so that is something to look for when you’re making your horse betting pick. Look out for a horse like Balance The Books, who came in third or better in all four of his 2012 starts and will be in action in Palm Beach in March, so you can get a good look at him. A horse like Trinniberg could also be a factor after winning the Sprint race at the Breeders’ Cup in November, but he’ll have to make into the field first.

Belmont Stakes

The Belmont is the most grueling race of the Triple Crown at a distance of 1 ½ miles, and that can seem like it is doubled to a horse if it is raining at Belmont Park. They don’t call it the “Test of Champions” for nothing: this race has ended the Triple Crown hopes and dreams of many jockeys, trainers and owners who were looking for the glory. So it shouldn’t be hard for you to see that you should look for horses that are good over distance and perhaps even those horses that are stronger in the back end of a race than they are in the front end. Go back in their bloodline to check out their pedigree because that could tell you something about how a horse will deal with the 1 ½ mile distance. This is always a hard race to peg, especially with this much time before the race, but at least the Triple Crown season isn’t that long and with three races taking place in the span of a five or six-week span, everything is very condensed, but you are able to get all the information you need. Start with the winners of the first two winners, obviously, then make your way through the fields to see which horses have been good in both races despite not winning. The horse that does this will have a great shot to wind up in the winner’s circle at Belmont Park, but again, nothing is assured in the Belmont Stakes and you should do your due diligence as soon as the Preakness is over in order to make a well-informed racebook pick at your favorite online betting site.
