United Nations Stakes Betting Predictions – Turbo Compressor Comes Out On Top In New Jersey

Posted by Marco Sussman on 7/5/2012 4:07:49 PM

Sports betting players should try to fit the Grade-1 United Nations Stakes into their weekend schedule as Saturday’s race at Monmouth Park should be a good one. It looks like there could be a rematch of another race from last month, and the horse that won will come out on top again in this 1 3/8-mile race with a purse of $750,000.

What: Horse Betting
When: Saturday, July 7th (check book for post time)
Where: Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, NJ
Pick: Turbo Compressor

Turbo Compressor dominated at the Colonial Turf Cup, which bodes well for running on the grass turf at Monmouth Park and this is his third time at this track, but the first time he has run on grass. The four-year-old colt has won three of his last five starts and this is his fifth start of 2012, but Turbo Compressor also has an ace in the hole in trainer Todd Pletcher, who won this race with English Channel in 2006 and 2007, and again with Balto Star in 2003.

Brilliant Speed has been up and down throughout the last year as he finished seventh in last year’s Kentucky Derby, then improved to third at the Belmont Stakes and then he finished third at the Breeders Cup Turf. However, Brilliant Speed has run three races in 2012, two Grade-1 races and a Grade-3, and he has finished fifth, third and fifth, so it’s tough to put a finger on the four-year-old colt.

Slim Shadey finished ninth in an allowance race at Santa Anita Park to open 2012, but then he has two wins and three second-place runs in his last five starts, and all of his runner-up finishes have come in his last three races. He did beat out Brilliant Speed to finish second to Little Mike in the Grade-1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, and Slim Shadey has responded to David Flores in the saddle as he has been for the entire year. This four-year-old gelding could end up stealing the show at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

Al Khali is coming off a disappointing sixth-place run at the Grade-1 Manhattan Handicap, but horse betting players probably don’t expect much from the six-year-old that hasn’t won a race since August 2010 at the Grade-2 Bowling Green. The only times that Al Khali has finished in the top two since then was a pair of allowance races at Keeneland, but you never in the world of horse betting. A horse could end up rolling back the years, but Al Khali shouldn’t rank high on your list.

Freud’s Honour doesn’t have a lot of experience against very good horses, and it took him three tries to get his maiden win at Monmouth Park, where he has raced in eight of his 10 events. Freud’s Honour has won three times, but one came last Fourth of July at the Choice Stakes. But he did finish fourth at an allowance race at Monmouth two months ago, so Freud’s Honour will need a much better performance on Saturday if he wants to overcome the horse betting odds.

Eldaafer finished second at the Grade-2 Brooklyn Handicap last month, and this is the second appearance in the United Nations Stakes for the seven-year-old as he finished sixth in this race behind eventual winner Teaks North in 2011. Eldaafer won the Breeders Cup Marathon in 2010, but he did finish sixth in the same race last year so his skills aren’t quite what they used to be, which happens to everyone and everything in sports. Will experience be the key for Eldaafer?

Air Support finished behind Turbo Compressor in the Colonial Turf Cup and that was his five top-three finish in his last seven starts. This is also the first time that Air Support will race at Monmouth Park, but he has always raced on turf so it shouldn’t be a big issue for the four-year-old. This is also the first time that Air Support is running a Grade-1 race, so it remains to be seen if nerves get the best of him.

This race looks like it is shaping up to be a rematch between Turbo Compressor and Air Support from the Colonial Turf Cup, but Turbo Compressor was the best horse and led for the entire race, which is why he gets the edge in this race as well. Pletcher obviously knows how to prepare horses for this race, but it could also depend on who is in the saddle. Joe Bravo rode Turbo Compressor to a win in an allowance race at Monmouth Park last year, and he could be called on again. Turbo Compressor is the smart online betting pick in this race.
