Primetime Picks For Week 13 of College Football Season

Posted by Blake Frazier on 11/20/2014 11:17:16 PM

With just a few weeks of regular season play remaining each and every battle this weekend will have playoff or bowl ramifications. Only a few top teams are in danger of losing this weekend, but many have outrageous point spreads that call for a deeper analysis of both squads. Although very few ranked team's square-off this week, don't be fooled into thinking the games previewed below are one-sided affairs that aren't worth watching.

Minnesota Golden Gophers @ Nebraska Cornhuskers

Odds: Nebraska -10

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are one of the best running teams in the land and they nearly pulled out an upset victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes just last Saturday. The Gophers finished the game with 218 total yards on the ground with a 5.0 yards per carry average, but they were unable to contain Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett as the freshmen threw for 200 yards and ran for another 189. The Nebraska Cornhuskers have their own feature back in Ameer Abdullah, but the three-year starter was stopped by the Wisconsin run defense last week, but will once again be relied upon as their main source of offense.

Pick: Minnesota

USC Trojans @ UCLA Bruins

Odds: UCLA -3

In the premier ranked game of the day the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans battle at 8 PM ET for the city of Los Angeles. The Trojans have won four of their last five including a victory over the #10 Arizona Wildcats, and the development of quarterback Cody Kessler is a huge reason why. The Junior is coming up on 3000 passing yards for the year and has a touchdown to interception ratio of 29:3, even better numbers than his opponent Brett Hundley, who's considered a first or second-round NFL talent. UCLA has played some close games lately, and the Trojans appear to be one of the most improved teams in the entire country and my favorite to come out of this game victorious.

Pick: USC

Louisville Cardinals @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Odds: Notre Dame -3

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are no longer a ranked squad, but they are still three-point favorites over the #24 Louisville Cardinals. The Irish are 4-1 at home this season with their only loss coming last weekend to the Northwestern Wildcats in overtime. The Irish have one of the top passing attacks in the country thanks to the return of quarterback Everett Golson as the Junior has already thrown for 3,044 yards and 27 touchdown passes. Louisville does have one of the more underrated defenses in the country, but the Irish are an extremely well-rounded team that should have no trouble picking up their fifth home victory of the year.

Pick: Notre Dame

Arizona Wildcats @ Utah Utes

Odds: Utah -4

The Utah Utes have earned their #17 ranking with victories over ranked UCLA and USC squads, as well as a two overtime victory over the Stanford Cardinal last Saturday. The Arizona Wildcats have a couple big victories of their own, including a 31-24 win over the #2 Oregon Ducks earlier in the season. They seem to have leveled off in recent weeks however as they beat the 6-5 Washington Huskies by a single point, and scored just seven points on the UCLA Bruins two weeks prior. Utah doesn't specialize in one area on offense, but they average 35 points of offense per game and are my pick to beat the Wildcats while covering the spread in the process.

Pick: Utah
