Bit Players May Soon Take Center Stage

At the end of this Triple Crown season, there was only one outstanding individual left standing but some that ran in his wake also have some agendas to complete before the season is over.

Belmont Stakes second Frosted will be given some time to recoup from his efforts. He ran super in defeat, as his rider, Joel Rosario, has said, Rosario: “My horse ran great but the horse everybody expected to win won the race. It’s exciting because we have not seen this for so long and the winner really looked brilliant.”

Dale Romans will likely give his trainer Frosted a brief rest before asking for too much. The summer races at Saratoga would be a natural progression. Romans: “The horse was perfect. My horse ran his race. It’s an amazing thing to be part of. Bob Baffert is the greatest trainer of all time. My hats off to him. Congratulations to the Zayats.

Mubtaahij will be back into the international scene sooner rather than later but his rider Irad Ortiz was not crying after the race when talking about American Pharoah, Ortiz: “He’s a monster. He’s a very nice horse. He’s a freak. I tried to be close to him. I kept following him and my horse ran very very good. The best horse won the race.”

Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, who was aloft 7th finisher in the Belmont Stakes Tale of Verve, has been on both ends of the see-saw when talking about the Belmont Stakes so he has a nice perspective on the Triple Crown winner, Stevens: “He ran a hell of a race. That’s a hell of horse. The race was over in the third jump from the gate. It was great to come back to a screaming crowd.”

Another pair could be back to battle in the July 4 Grade 2 Los Alamitos Derby.

Bob Baffert’s Dortmund has this race on the radar and if Firing Line can get over his foot concerns, he could very well be in the mix too.

And don’t be shocked if a new shooter coming rolling into Orange County in the form of Tiznow’s son Kentuckian, who won the Laz Barrera Stakes in May and has drilled the proverbial hole in the wind since.

Firing Line’s trainer Simon Callaghan has some concerns, Callaghan: “His front left foot got very sore and I think it was about to come to an abscess. We caught it in time and we’re working on it, but sometimes those feet—it just takes long than you initially think.”

Dortmund and Firing Line ran super in their first Los Alamitos appearance when they hit the wire together.

Since the Preakness, Dortmund has just one recorded drill. He worked on June 11 in an easy :49 1/5 spin for 4 furlongs and his trainer is letting the runner tell him what to do.

Baffert: “We’re going to work him, see how he is, then get him back to top form. He needed that little break. We’ve got the Los Al Derby, but there are all kinds of stuff. There’s no main target. There’s just targets. That’s just the first option.”

One thing players have to be careful of moving forward is where these runners show up. They will be over bet and could very well be vulnerable to a fit and fresh horse that will offer value.
