STAYING THE BREEDERS’ CUP MILE

Posted by on 9/23/2013 7:44:46 PM

Some of the most athletic equine performers will be on center stage for online sports betting site players to appreciate in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on November 2 at Santa Anita and they may all be trying to knock out last year’s winner Wise Dan.

The $2 million 8-furlong turf event has been won by some greats over the decades. Royal Heroine beat the boys in the inaugural running, Miesque and Lure won back-to-back Miles and the incredible Da Hoss won this race in 1996 and came back 2 years later to do it again.

The great Goldikova owned the race from 2008 through 2010 and last year Wise Dan sat an ideal 3-hole trip before exploding when it counted to win going away with a 107 Beyer Speed Figure as the 9-5 favorite.

Americans took the first 3 spots in the Mile last year in the course record final time.

Favorites have been prominent in the Mile to the tune of over 36% through the years. And the Europeans have done well in the Mile when run at Santa Anita cashing in 4 of the 6 runnings of the event.

A horse from the 10 slot has hit the exacta in 10 of the last 11 Miles and last year there were only 9 entrants. The runners this year will be hard pressed to match the winner of 2011. That year Court Vision nearly blew up the tote board winning and paying $131.60, the second biggest payoff in BC history.

And this race has been very hard on the sophomore set. Only two 3-year-olds in history, Lure and War Chant have succeeded in the mile.

This year, as mentioned, Wise Dan will be the horse to beat once again as he has never been better. The concern for his connections is just to keep him happy approaching the race and then hope for a clear trip.

If a players tries to beat him, the value will be there.

One runner that must be considered is Toronado. He is a sophomore, so he must buck that trend, but the more than capable Richard Hannon trains him and he already has won a Group 1 in England this year. He also had recent surgery to correct a breathing problem.

Hannon also may send over Olympic Glory, who will be trying to win at a mile for the first time but was just 2nd a nose at that distance in August in a Group 1 in France.

Moonlight Cloud will be looking for a bit of revenge as she ran poorly in the mile last year. Trained by the legendary Freddie Head, Cloud was bumped around at Anita last year but is unbeaten in 3 starts in 2013. She has won two straight Group 1s and she beat big fields in the process.

The best hope for the California based runners may be Obviously. This gelding makes his own luck because he has legit speed and he is repeatedly proven on the grass at Anita.

Troubled in his only loss this year, this runner brings :43 and change speed to the party and will likely try to steal it if he suits up in the Mile.

As the days count down to the big event, try to monitor how each of the Mile candidates are acting at Anita and pay strict attention to the Euros.

With the temperatures possible near 100, those from across the pond could find themselves in distress if they can’t take the heat.
