bet on ufc 133

Sports betting players will just be praying to get to UFC 133 without any more injuries, as the card has been jinxed by a number of injuries, but there is still some excitement on the bill. Vitor Belfort and Yoshihiro Akiyama both like to mix up and put on a show for the fans, but Belfort will want to put his last devastating loss behind him. Look for his electric striking ability to be the difference against a very tough opponent.

  • What: UFC Betting
  • When: Saturday, August 6th, 9:00 PM ET
  • Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA
  • Pick: Vitor Belfort -300

Why Bet On Vitor Belfort (19-9)

Belfort goes by the nickname, “The Phenom”, but to be honest, his MMA career has been a little underwhelming. He has held just one championship, the UFC light heavyweight title back in January 2004 when he defeated Randy Couture, but he lost the belt in a rematch against “The Natural” eight months later. Belfort has often come up short when facing top-tier talent, and he has lost against the likes of Couture (twice), Alistair Overeem (twice), Chuck Lidell, Tito Ortiz, Kazushi Sakuraba and Dan Henderson. He did manage to make short work of former middleweight champion Rich Franklin at 195 pounds in September 2009, and then received a shot at champion and fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva. The pound-for-pound king (arguable, at least) landed a front kick to Belfort’s face at 3:25 of the first round of their match in February, putting another big-name loss on his resume.

But against everyone but Silva, Belfort has the advantage in striking over anyone in the 185-pound division. Thirteen of his 19 professional wins have come via knockout and when he is on and confident, Belfort is as quick and explosive as anyone in the world. The problem is, he gets a little tentative when the spotlight is on. This fight may be more relaxing to him, although he would be making a huge mistake if he underestimated his opponent.

Why Bet On Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-3, two NC)

Akiyama has fought in the UFC three times, and in all three, he has been awarded the “Fight of the Night”, and he is known to have one of the best chins in the game.  After a split-decision win over Alan Belcher in July 2009, he was submitted by Chris Leben a year later and he lost a decision against Michael Bisping in Bisping’s home country of England. Akiyama has been involved in some controversial contests, a no-contest against Sakuraba in December 2006, in which he was found guilty of applying lotion in order to make his skin slippery, and another no-contest against Kazou Misaki a year later as Misaki landed an illegal kick when Akiyama was on the ground.

It’s difficult to tie down Akiyama’s style, as he has backgrounds in boxing and judo (in which he is a third-degree black belt) and some karate, but he is not a technical fighter. Akiyama likes to get in the middle of the ring and make things chaotic for his opponent, where it’s on the ground or standing up. He has five wins via knockout, along with seven submissions, and Akiyama can adapt his game to his opponent’s style.

How It Will Play Out

UFC betting odds have Belfort as a massive -300 favorite in your sportsbook, while Akiyama is a dangerous +240 underdog and this isn’t going to be easy for Belfort. Akiyama poses a serious threat for the “Phenom” because he’s going to press and try to smother Belfort. These two are both black belts in judo, but Belfort can bring his Brazilian jiu-jitsu to the table, while Akiyama has his karate.

However, Belfort just needs to relax and slow down when he is in the ring, because he looks tense in big fights. No offense to Akiyama, but he shouldn’t be able to compete with Belfort’s explosiveness in the striking game, and his chin is going to be serious tested against Belfort, who was embarrassed by Silva and will be out to make a statement. It’s not going to be a boring fight by any means, and you should try to wager on this as the “Fight of the Night” as the co-main event of this injury-racked card. Take the “Phenom”, Vitor Belfort, in your online betting picks.
